I've been really enjoying full day hikes with friends and want to try doing a multiday hike. I've never planned one before and I'm not quite sure how do decide a route or general plan of attack

Is it better to just pay an outfitter for something like this? I have the time to plan it out I'm just not sure how to.

Anyone here do multiday hikes?

This is tricky, as it’s subjective. One persons “incredibly hard” is another persons “easy mode.” Still, read any reviews you can. FB groups are a decent source, depending on location. AllTrails as well.

You don’t want to run out, but at the same time water is a pretty heavy item. Streams are shown on maps.

>plan fewer miles
I ran a MeetUp group with 1/0+ members. The average person who showed up was good for 10 miles over moderate terrain. I prefer 15, and that’s stopping to take in the sights.

>don’t overthink
It’s not as complicated as you might think. You find some trails, look at a map, decide on mileage, and go. Take into account how long you’ll be driving; hiking for 8 hours if you arrive at noon might be the best idea.

Too lazy to google it for you, but a good location can really improve your experience

>go with a group
Again, it’s hit or miss. We had some serious weirdos show up for our group hikes, but the logistics were all taken care of, including shuttles and travel. You can try MeetUp. It’s generally an older crowd but other than that it’s pretty diverse. Alternatively, go with a friend. I mean this is 4Chan so you probably don’t have any, but you never know.

Multi day hiking is retarded unless you’re doing something truly significant. Camping isn’t pleasant; it’s a means to an end. I can’t tell you how many times I see people multi-day hike a meager 20-30 mile route.

I enjoy the nature, workout and shooting the shit with friends on the trail. The sights make it nice but it's fun to be out of a city with friends just relaxing.

what sort of terrain are you thinking? are you going to pack and out all your amenities, or are you bushcrafing and shit? if its the former, then it's really pretty easy.

That's something I'd have to take up with my group. We have done some of everything (forest, grass, rocky) no rock climbing or anything. They'd probably want to run tents and some comforts. I guess it's a matter of figuring out camping in crown land (canadian here) and picking a trail/route through the sticks.

Do you have overnight camping gear?
Start with a brief 1-night overnighter, find a spot to hike in 2-3 miles so that way you're close enough to your car if something goes wrong, but far enough to be independent for everything else (carrying food, water, etc.)

This also lets you learn how long it takes for you to do basic camp chores, cooking, set up camp, etc., as well as how fast or slow you walk with a full pack.
Once you get the hang of things and have figured out your pace (mileage/day), you can plan longer and multi-day trips

If you're concerned about getting all the gear, read pic related and slowly work your way up.

I like it on a psychological level. I tend to quit things when I get tired of them, but when you’re 2 days into a 5 day hike, you have no option but to keep going, no matter how shit you feel.

I’ve planned my first multi day hike on my own. Will do it in 10 days.
Basically since it’s in another country, I’ve just booked mountain huts. I have bought a stove for this event, a sleeping bag, a map and a compass. The goal is onviously to reach each mountain hut at my own pace while enjoying the landscape. I will go easy on my first multi day hike entirely organized on my own.
