Knife thread?

I'm almost completely new to knife ownership other than kitchen and swiss army knives. I wanted to get some opinions on good affordable knives to take innawoods.

Also I wanted to get into wood carving/whittling and if anyone had recommendations for those as well that would be awesome.

If you want to get into woodworking/carvings then get the proper tools (carving/whittling knives) to do it. Don't rely on a bushcraft knife. As a matter of fact, don't rely on just one single type of knife and expect it to do everything.

if actually in the wilderness i would take the kabar heavy bowie. it can chop, slice, pierce, and its excellent protection from wild animals that may get too close or attack because you smell like beef jerkey.

for carving/whittling you just want something medium sized, long lasting, and cheapish. An Opinel knife would be good, but for detailed shit(so not just sharpening sticks, or whatever) you'll want a wood carving set. Your choice.

I highly doubt I need a heavy bowie knife I live in BC not Australia. But I'll lookd into Mori and that Buck 119. I'm just a guy with limited camping experience who was just given some of his mothers and brothers old camping gear and wanted to get into it.

As for the whittling I saw some beginners whittling kits on amazon that came with knives, thumb guards, and a beginners block I think I'll stick with something like that but I didn't know if I could or should use just any knife for whittling and camping

I suppose I could have saved us both time and said, mora or opinel, or if you want to go the fancy route, wood carving knives.(they come in a set usually, it's not like a single knife great for wood carving)

Yea as others have said get dedicated whitteling tools if you wanna get into that,
If i were you for a general camp knife id get something medium to short in length, scandi grind because its easier to learn to sharpen, and fixed blade, not necessarily full width full tang unless you really think its worth the weight and money, good luck with the hunt

I'm looking for a good all-around EDC knife and I've narrowed it down to the SOG SOGzilla small version pictured here or a Spyderco Delica. The SOG is pretty much a clone of the Delica/Endura but the reviews I've read and watched have had almost all good things to say about it. Is it worth it to shell out the extra $35 for the Spyderco?

Heres a second to show off the safety hook which I think is a godsend for ripping into boxes, zip ties, especially duct tape, Very nice because you can keep your main edge wicked sharp and and beat on the safety hook all you want.

Think about how you'd feel if you lost the Delica vs the SOG. If you pay too much for a knife, you won't feel too good EDCing it and risking losing it. You could put the $35 towards something else .

Mora is brilliant for innawoods, and you can use an Opinel or the short blade on a SAK for whittling in lieu of proper wood tools.

I keep three knives personally, a seven inch Blackfox hunting blade, which chops like a motherfucker and is lighter than an axe.
A Mora for my fiddlier work, feathering, working with paracord, bark cutting/stripping kinda thing. Then a Victorinox multitool for general utility stuff and a backup blade.
Opinels and Moras are always great for cheap but tough use and abuse knives.

I went ahead and got the $25 SOGzilla. I still want to get a Spyderco knife at some point though as I've heard nothing but good things. I just couldn't justify spending $60 on an EDC right now.

And I had never, ever, needed anything more than a Swiss Army knife. Literally never once, in all the things I have done, have I needed to cut anything my SAK would not cut while innawoods.

Spend 15-30 bucks, get a SAK or a Mora, go innawoods, profit.

Spyderco is an outstanding knife company. They can get expensive. Their higher end stuff is almost as quality as custom knives like sabenzas, Emerson's, etc.
And even their lower end stuff is still fantastic (I own a police and a tenacious, but have fingered lots of others)

Spyderco and benchmade are the tip top of generic/mass produced knife companies

WTF are you carving out there that you need a mobile wood shop? I'd rather pack the wood out and do it at home if that was my only option.
don't blame the tools, blame the carpenter. pic related is just an example. you can replace it with any half way decent/profiled/sharp knife and get the same result.

yeah with boker there is actually a few types. there is the boker plus which can be hit or miss steel wise and quality wise. there is the Boker Magnum, which is just plain crap. and regular Boker which generally is really nice stuff. you're best bet is to always check the steel they are using if you can.

I just reccently moved up to Vancouver Canada and was wondering where I could get a knife? Canadian Tire? Do I need any kind of licensing? I was originally from USA which I could you could almost buy them from dollar stores but I don't know of any Canadian laws regarding knives

Legally I think you can open carry anything that isn't a restricted weapon (like switchblades, butterfly knives and push daggers), though if you walk around downtown Van with a bowie knife or machete on your belt you might attract attention. Technically a SAK in your pocket could be construed as concealed weapon but in practice everyone does it. Not sure if there are any provincial level restrictions.
