Marlborough Sounds too considering it's just across the Strait. If you want to go fishing there I would do some research in to it, some areas are Marine Reserves.

Driving I guess, I don't think anyone would have problems with distance as long as it doesn't take over a week.
I've already done the Able Tasman walk, but not for a few years. I'm sure no one else has done it in my family. I'll ask them, thanks for the suggestion.

That's another good idea, although I'm the only one in my family who likes fish so I think that wouldn't be the best activity.

You can drive across New Zealand in like 2 or 3 days.

You could go up to Mt Ruapehu and do the Tongariro crossing.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand's most spectacular tramping tracks, and is considered the most popular one-day tramp in New Zealand.
You could stay in Taupo and hike/bike/drive around the lake or visit the Huka falls.

Are you allowed to camp anywhere you want or is it only allowed in national parks? I'm kind of used to being allowed to camp wherever I want. Are there also plenty of lakes or rivers for fresh water inside the country?

Yeah you can camp nearly anywhere. If you can't camp there will be some signage usually. Generally don't allow camping on beaches.
There are plenty of lakes and rivers.

Well the condition for being allowed to camp anywhere here is that you don't damage the property you are camping on. Following these rules in NZ should mean I'll do just fine. I also checked out NZ more and it seems you suffer from a brain drain. I'm sure your country would welcome a civil engineer with some capital in the baggage when shit hits the fan in yurop.
