Nice carp OP, I’ve never been able to hook up with one using my tenkara. Pic related was caught on a tenkara rod last fall, biggest trout I’ve landed with it. I think the main problem is that anyone who has tried it on this board has used some cheap chinese made rod and thinks that casting should be easy since it’s “basically just a cane pole.” A quality Japanese rod and good technique turn it into an effective and relaxing way of fishing that will take years to truly master.

To be honest I know that I’m a snob, especially when it comes to fishing and even more so about tenkara. That being said, if you’re willing to spend ~$200 you can get a very nice Nissin rod that you will never need to upgrade. This is the same or less than most of the “American” rods that are actually manufactured in china. My brother has a very cheap rod that he ordered direct from China and it fishes and casts as well as the Tenkara USA rods that cost three times as much. So if you want to go cheap (nothing wrong with that btw) I would recommend going really cheap and cutting out the middleman. Don’t bother buying a kit either, the line and flies that come with them are usually shit and should be replaced anyway.

I've fished with it before. It's principle can be completely accomplished with a regular fly rod but a fly rod can make casts longer than 20 feet. My buddy fishes with one a lot and he constantly loses fish. It's by far the biggest meme out there, it's like fly fishing on steroids how big of a moneygrab pretentious meme it is. It's fun I guess, but complete waste of 200 bucks.

4 piece travlel rod. Mine is from michell, cheap as hell but gets the job done and can almost all fit in a paper towel roll. Only place tenkara actually would be acceptable is hiking along tiny brook trout streams that you can have one foot on one side and the other foot on the other
