Is there a hiking trail that crosses the Great Planes? Anyting that compares in length to the Pacific Crest Trail or Appalachian Trail.

there is none. your best option as of now is the caprock canyon trailway in texas, 50 something miles through prairie and canyon but does pass through towns. the next longest i know of is in comanche natl grassland in co, which i think is the largest intact prairie ecosystem.

i remember seeing something a while back about some group making a whole east coast to west coast trail on old rail lines what happened to that

The Twin Cities in MN have a pretty extensive paved biking trail. There has been talks to extend it all the way to Duluth. Not much for hiking that I know of though.

the great plains in the south eventually turn into the chihuahan desert in west texas or into the hill country of central texas, the plains dont really reach to mexico. that map isnt very accurate because central texas is forested hills not plains and south and southeast texas is part of the coastal plain which is entirely separate. and the chihauahan desert extends further north of the rio grande to the border with new mexico basically

Hopefully they put in a big water slide from the West coast to the East coast. Imagine being on that slide and getting to see so much of the country

so i looked it up and the only thing i found talked about a slow/shallow waterslide at a 10% grade. so if we built one from the top of pikes peak (which conveniently has a road to the top), we could make it about 16 or 17 miles before hitting the ground in eastern colorado. still worth it.

the more i look at this map, the shittier it gets. the great basin includes the colorado river watershed and the co front range that empty to the pacific and gulf of mexico respectively? the rocky mountains stop in northern nm? the great plains end at the canadian border?

Kek I was just thinking how miserable this sounded. I backpack in Florida and at least our prairie has intermittent oak hammock and pine scrub. I cannot imagine endless sun bearing down. You may think you are tough, but the sun will beat any man down no problem.

I've crossed the plains multiple times via vehicle and even that sucks. It is little more than a a large inconvenient patch between the interesting places. I mean, of course, other than the farming purposes.

Longest trails i can think of are in Kansas, the Flint Hills Nature trail and the Prairie Spirit trail. They are only like 100ish miles each though and fully within Kansas.
Though you do also have the ND and MN sections of the North Country trail which are probably more substantial, but still not close to the AT/PCT

This. I've gone across MT WY and CO multiple times. No one would ever make a hiking trail across the plains, there would be no point. There's literally nothing out there, it's like a grassy desert in some spots. In certain places is basically an endless void, with some hills here and there. Miles and miles of no shade or water sources.
