You can still get a rifle pretty easily in OZ/NZ , they just got rid of most semi autos. Though if you’ve got the right license you can still buy literally anything in NZ like an Uzi: https://www.guncity.com/9mm-israeli-uzi-blued-synthetic-c-cat-349521

The point, before somebody got their feelings hurt, is that a handgun is easy to keep on you at all times, and quickly drawn and fired from almost any situation. This guy appears to murder people, but he'd probably not risk it on someone presenting to be a hard target. It's harder to keep a long gun handy at all times, they are slower to shoulder, acquire sights, and fire, and they can be almost impossible to shoot with any accuracy from some positions (reclined)
Something the RLI used to do on patrols, was to find where you actually want to sleep before you stop. Then you keep moving, cooking dinner and "setting up" around sunset in a likely camping spot, then quietly moving back to the first spot after dark.

yes a remington 700 is fine for hunting dear but if you're in your tent or outside in a sleeping bag and you get woken up at 2am by some creepo wandering around your camp its a little cumbersome

I’m not a gun person myself, but I’m leaning towards “no”.
I just wanted to point out that “gun ban” isn’t quite what it’s made out to be. It just took a lot of rifles off legitimate users- hunters and farmers.
