So I come to /out/ to ask how many of you are trappers?
What methods do you use?
What do you target for trapping?
What is legal and illegal to do where you live/trap?
Why do you trap? What is your intent? Do you make money from trapping?

I've trapped for two seasons now but I don't know if I'd really call myself a trapper. I still haven't made a coonskin cap.
I try to shoot mostly for coyote so baited footholds.
My reading of the law boils down to don't fuck with foxes and keep your seasons straight and you'll be fine.
To remove pest species and make locals farms safer. Not really, I haven't got serious about trapping enough to break even yet but I do make money off hunting. You wouldn't believe how much people are willing to pay to get rid of hogs.

I like pitfalls with punji spikes, I generally save up a few days worth of shit before making my traps.

generally predator animals, the occasional moose, and I even got a horned owl once.

Don't know, never really been a concern to me.

The back yard; maim, infect, injur; No, it's more for fun that anything.

Cottontails, pheasants, and the occasional turkey

What methods do you use?
Cottontails: standard rabbit snare
Pheasants: piece of stove pipe with wire mesh blocking one end, baited with corn; pheasant goes in, can't turn around, too stupid to back out
Turkey: Inclined trench about 2' deep or so, baited with corn; works about the same as above

I believe live snares are illegal; nothing I do is against the law when in season at least

Do you make money from trapping?
Not really. I sell skins/furs to friends that want them for a pittance. It's not what I'd call a good source of income.

This is a popular myth but it's wrong. /out/ was created for people who love to go outside and do their thing, without being a redneck gun nut.
Milsurp, bug out bags, preppers and what not are pretty much disdained all over /out/, hence this is why /k/ related threads get deleted here so fast.

I lack the camera/ability to make pictures, and google isn't cooperating, so I'll explain as best as I can:

Get a 3-foot section of 6-inch wide stove pipe. Tape a piece of chicken wire over one end. Set it down in the field. Sprinkle some corn along the inside, leading from the open end toward the end covered with wire. Instant pheasant trap.

This is a laughably easy method for trapping birds. You can also use the same general design for grouse, rock pigeons, etc. if you adjust the size for what you're hunting.

I can vouch for this. I use it to catch spruce grouse every so often, except what I do is punch a few dozen holes into the pipe. It makes burs on the inside that they get their feathers caught on. Absolutely no chance of escape, and it doesn't harm them.

It's a wonder how those birds can thrive in the wild when they're so stupid.
