what would you recommend for 20 day thru hike?
I won't be able to resupply, but there are alpine lakes with trout. (not a good fisherman though)
would it be possible to get by with less than 15-20lbs of food on the cheap?

If you're through hiking, the amount of time you spend fishing is not going to make up the weight savings of not bringing your own food

I guarantee there will be down days, OP is not fit enough to hike miles every single day with a loaded up backpack. You should always bring enough food to get through without supplementing, but fishing is a nice way to get some fresh food instead of musty Mountain House noodles for 3 weeks straight.

I bet you’ll do more than 10 miles a day, at least if the terrain isn’t particularly challenging. Walking 10 hours a day at 2mph is 20 miles. You’ll be bored if you don’t walk 10+ hours. I’d just get a shitload of freeze dried food, of all different “meals” so you don’t eat the same thing over and over.

20 days x 2000 calories per day = 40,000 calories

20lbs of food x 16oz per pound = 320oz total

40,000 Calories / 320 Oz = 125 calories per ounce. Of course you’ll be burning closer to 3,000, so 187.5 cal/Oz @20lbs. The latter is pretty hard to achieve.

The rule of thumb is 1.5 to 2 lbs of food per day. So roughly 560 Oz of food (1.75 lbs x 16oz x 20 days). If you eat 3,000 calories per day for 20 days, you’d need just under 110 calories per ounce, which is doable. And it’s kind of a proof positive that that rule holds true, at least in hypotheticals.

I tend to take oats, whole wheat noodles, peanut butter (powdered is lighter/takes less space, but relatively sucks), honey/syrup, and hemp protein.

It’s a rule of thumb. Google “hiking food per day” or something and you’ll see. Also it’s how it plays out IRL. When I pack my food, it ends up being close to 2lbs per day, and I’m not taking meme meals like loaves of pemmican or bottles of olive oil. I take stuff I enjoy thats also calorie dense.

All right I guess this is an /out/ food general now.
Looking to test out some couscous cold soak/quick on the stove recipes, with all dried ingredients.
So far I'm thinking
>couscous, obviously
>drumbled vegetable stock
>dried onions
>dried tomatoes
>possibly raisins
What else is good to put in there, for some protein and fats? Cashews, pine nuts, and bring a small bottle of olive oil?
Not a vegetarian btw, just having a hard time imagining what kind of dried meat would work well in a cold soak

It's not the cheapest, but (old school) pemmican will keep you going. You can buy rendered beef tallow of etsy for pretty cheap, and mix with beef you dry at home. Historically proven, calorie dense and lasts forever.

ive never hiked for more than 7days without resuply but here is what i would suggest:
1. you gotta nail the balance between starving and thus not enjoying the hike and having too heavy backpack and thus not enjoying the hike. humans can survive long time without food - you could easily take food for a week and then starve and i think it wouldnt be a threat to your life. but it would be fucking pain and not very enjoyable experience at all
2. i would take 2lbs of oatmeal + lots of different nuts and dried fruits (i know it is kinda expensive but still) + chocolate. you can use nuts and chocolate for snacks but also cook porridge and add it in there - you dont even have to take sugar cuz chocolate makes the porridge sweet. 2lbs of oatmeal can easily last you for 10-15meals. but you want to variate the ingredients as much as possible cause eating the same shit every day sucks.
3. learn to fish

One thing that I've done is dried beans, albeit only for a 4 day trip but it worked well. In the morning if you fill up a water bottle 1/3 of the way with water and than the same volume of beans they'll rehydrate over the course of the day and you can heat them up for dinner. Boil them with rice and add some lard and you've got a third world delicacy

Dry, raw beans, even after soaking, can take between 30-60 minutes to cook, depending on the bean. That'll be a lot of fuel over 20 days.
