is it possible to hunt and trap as a profession or at least for a side gig? tired of the wage cage.

sure just learn the 8,000,000 rules about it, then get the proper licenses ($$$), then set up a processing chain so you can actually do something once you have a bunch of dead animals, then have at it

anything is possible anon, but being an independent trapper is either a full time gig that nets you very little money, or a full-time hobby that drains all of your resources

there's a reason they started using commercial fur farms.

Dunno, my step-dad used to hunt kangaroos and pigs for a living and apparently made a lot. Then again, he slowly transitioned to plumbing. So the work is either very unstable or pays less nowadays than having a trade.

It’s more of a hobby then a career. I do a bit of it. The main problem is the fur prices have dropped significantly. It’s hard to break even. It takes time and money for fuel for truck ,quad and boat. A guy still needs to eat too while he’s out there. Most fur prices haven’t raised since the 80s but every thing else has gone up. Only reason I still do it is because I spent October November and most of December living in An off grid cabin deer hunting and looking after a Christmas tree farm. I’ll set a few traps just to keep the trade alive. My father is in his 70s and he’ll do some of the skinning and stretching for me.

Trapping is pretty life consooming but if you take an elk or a moose you'll have all the protein you need for most of the year. That's well over 1500 dollars worth of meat. The catch is that you have to buy the rifle, permit, gear, etc beforehand but it should be less than 600 for a very basic setup. A deer is even easier but won't last you as long. It's illegal but if you really wanted to make some dough you could sell the elk or moose meat to friends or family for petty expensive. Right now elk goes for something like 10 bucks per pound but you should give them a sizeable discount.

It could be of use to you if you were out innawoods full time and did it to sustain yourself over long periods of time as it becomes part of your life style utilizing the meat, fur etc for yourself.

Live trapping is where the money is. Trap foxes and coyotes and sell them to fox pens. If I remember correctly coyotes go for $75 or so and foxes are a little more.

Not in American, you could be a guide. depends on where you live and what you know. Russia has big trapping industry in siberia..which is a fulltime life investment. commerical trapping isn't "ooh i;ll just leave a trap for a bit" your entire life would be devoted to trapping various animals, mostly martens.

This is the way around here. You can make in the neighborhood of 50k working six months and spend all year doing what you want. I know a striper fishing guide and a couple of hunting guides (deer, turkey, and duck)

If you could somehow get a bit of land paid in full to homestead on and trap enough animals to feed you and pay taxes you might be able to have a meager but stable life off of hunting and trapping.

From what I have seen, 50K is unrealistic for a hunting guide. Maybe for a really good experienced one, but not for someone just starting out. more like 15k or 20k.
