Can someone redpill me on backing stoves? Is it worth spending the extra money and getting the jetboil/MSR brand or just a Chinese brand from Amazon?

MSR stoves 100% worth it.
I wouldn’t bother with jet boil on an MSR except high altitude winter trip, it’s insane how much heat they put out. They last forever too.

Jetboil is not necessary, but MSR and Primus stoves are solid.

Dunno about chinkstuff, wouldn't trust non certified equipment with flammable or explosive substances

Whisperlite multifuel. Only ever used Coleman fuel but it’s nice to have options. Also can use pretty much any flammable liquid by changing the jet, 20 sec job (if that).

No idea about Jet, I've got the SOTO Stove and it's amazing. It has a micro-regulator that keeps the flame strength consistent and it boils water like you wouldn't believe. It's also light and super compact, so works for me.

I personally use a cheap Chinese amazon stove now, specifically the BRS-3000T. It's tiny and light as fuck and performs exactly the same as my SOTO, and costs a fraction of the price. Some claim the arms bend but I think that's just a result of trying to put a heavy pot/pan on it. It's really only designed for small aluminium or titanium pots.

You definitely don't need a full jetboil set, I feel like they are a bit of a meme, but I've never known anyone who's had one fail on them.

Depends. I got one of the Chinese ones from Amazon and one of the arms folded and bent from a small cast iron pot. No idea if the pocket rocket is stronger, but my friends all thought I was an idiot for even trying that.

Bought myself a €25 Primus burner, visited mom and tested it out with my 900 ml Snow Peak mug. Seems alright, porridge done in roughly a minute. Fingers crossed it will work alright though my little hiking trip.

Agreed. At first I was hesitant when I got my MiniMo for $130 on sale, but man, it packs well, boils a full thing of water fast, is fuel efficient, works in all settings I tried (heavy rain forest, windy beach, haven't tried high altitude), and has not failed. I was tempted to just get a burner, but I had an REI giftcard and figured why not. It may be an expensive hipster meme, but they are exceptional. Since I only ended up paying $30 after my gift card, I really can't complain. Also got a neat camo color.

Jetboil has problems on cold nights at high altitude. Same troubles with pocket rockets. Whisperlite multifuel is damn expensive, but you can flip the can over. If you don’t care about boil time or mess hexamine tabs are the cheapest and lightest solution.

I have not used a Chinese knockoff, the pocketrocket is not expensive
its 45 bucks.
if the knock off is 15 bucks but fails while you are camping, you will wish you spent the extra 30 bucks

has been working brilliantly for over the year.
also use Chinese titanium pots i got on alibaba for a fraction of the price of the big name brand stuff.
i also use a chinese down sleeping bag.

anyone who is still paying top dollar for MRS stuff or other big brands which charge ridiculous prices is a fucking idiot. the stuff is only marginally better, but astronomically more expensive.

Manufacturers had to figure out a way to compare stoves to one another. Since anyone using a canister stove isn’t concerned about weight, they needed a metric, and boil time is the only other way to compare them. It’s funny because it’s pretty useless; we’re talking about 3 minutes compared to 6 minutes.

One thing I really hate is hiking inna group when someone fires up their rocket engine 120dB Jetboil. They’re so loud the cicadas stop singing.
