Hey /out/ists. I’m developing an interested in improving my photography skills while I’m camping, hiking etc. All I have is my smart phone, but I’m wondering what equipment you use to photograph.
Specifically, weight and space are a concern so I’m not sure if a DSLR camera is practical. Are point and shoot cameras worth it, or is the upgrade over a smart phone not enough to justify the costs?

Honestly point and shoot cameras give you the same quality a smartphone would. The nice thing about DSLRs is the ability to manipulate light really well, and the ability to use different lenses and focal lengths.
I have an older Nikon DSLR that I take camping. I can capture great pictures of stuff like tiny insects, stars, and most prominently, landscapes with perfect lighting. I can make timelapses with more nuanced effects like exposing each frame for however long I want (unlike a smartphone). Different lenses just add to the cool photo effects I can produce.
The most important thing for taking good pictures is not the camera you use, but the photographer's skill. If you decide that you want a dedicated camera, but you're worried about weight, go for a mirrorless camera. They are smaller and lighter than DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras, but still let you do everything a DSLR can. The differences come down to stuff like autofocus speed (better for wildlife) and video (mirrorless have advantage here).

Here's what I personally use while backpacking/camping:
>Nikon D90
>18-55mm nikkor lens
>55-200mm nikkor lens
>macro lens adapter
>Manfrotto mini tripod (just to keep it off the dirt)
>intervalometer (for shooting timelapses)
>small camera bag (fits the D90 body and one lens)
>additional sleeve for my other lens and macro adapter
All together it weighs about 8 lbs, but if you're just getting into it, the camera and one lens weighs less than 4, even less if you use a mirrorless camera.
Sometimes I will bring only half of these things too. It depends on the trip and what I'm hoping to capture.

One thing I forgot to mention was weather-sealed cameras. You don't need one if you just care for your camera well, but with a weather-sealed camera you can get it sandy, dusty, dirty, and wet and it won't matter. CHeck out Pentax for those.

you mentioned your concern for weight and space, RX100 series is a very good camera for the size
Here's example of it's sized compared to a beginner DSLR (Nikon D3400) and beginner mirrorless camera (a6000)

Don't bother with a point and shoot it wont be much better than your phone and less convenient. Get a DSLR or mirrorless camera as long as you can swap the lens. Either are made pretty light it's the lens that's heavy. I got a 75-300mm lens though and its fun zooming in wicked close on distant mountains or animals, you get shots impossible with a phone. If you're concerned about weight have you tried not being a pussy? Getting cool shots makes lugging it around worth it.

Not that anon but for outdoor shooting I'd recommend getting a cheap used Pentax, they all have weather sealing out the ass, their lens are weather sealed, and you can get them for fairly cheap. The older sensor isn't going to give you any real image quality advantage over a smartphone, but you can stack images better with a proper camera than you can with a phone (you will need a tripod a stable surface to set your camera on)

I got a Cannon Rebel T5 like 6 years ago. Pics related. I don't think it's the best but It's great for how cheap it was and how long it's lasted + I got the bundle that came with a sweet zoom lens. The new model is the Rebel T7 i think and It's a bit better and a little smaller/lighter. If you have a larger budget my buddy has a Nikon D850 that he loves but those are really the only 2 cameras I've had experience with. If you want to get a good idea of the quality of the images go on Flikr or twitter or something, people usually tag whatever camera they use in shots. But remember good shots are not just the camera, it's the person behind it!

I forgot to address the weather; I take mine camping all the time and if you take care of it, don't leave it on the ground, dust-off it once in a while It'll last np. Its never been submerged or anything but ive used mine in light drizzle and in snowstorms many times np. I know lens shields are supposed to be for lens flare from the sun, but they also work to keep water droplets off the lens as long as you're not aiming up-wind.

Buy a medium format Fujifilm 645, digital cameras will run out of batteries. Film doesn't require any batteries (other than the shutter battery) to work.

Good lens
Large sensor for small camera
Sturdy metal body
Similar controls to DSLR, manual shooting.
Takes RAW images.
Shits on phone cameras despite what someone said earlier - they’re misinformed.

Is comparatively expensive to similar cameras with near identical specs like Panasonic TZ110.
Unintuitive menu system.

You can get the first model of the RX100 for less than $400 new, same price as the Panasonic. For my money I prefer the Sony's photos to the Panasonic, based on the best images I've seen from both cameras.

All good mate, each to their own, I’m far from loyal to any brand. I’ve got a few cameras, Sony, Canon, Panasonic and take one out depending on sports/landscape/compact/waterproof/compromise. At the end of the day, try to demo a couple and just get what you prefer.
Try to make sure it has manual/priority modes though. Aperture and Speed priority with manual iso are all you really need in most situations. Plus a polarising filter and variable ND filter for lush waterfalls. I mainly use my compact for portability, but I do like to have my toys.

With that in mind camera is secondary to the lens, so try to get a cheaper camera but i better lens, i dont have any specific recomendations theres plenty of options out there, look around and see what fits your budget best

While I would agree that a DSLR is definitely going to give you the best image if you’re willing to commit to the price, pack size and weight, those saying point-and-shoots aren’t much better than smartphones have no idea what they’re talking about. The right point-and-shoot in the right hands can take as good an image as any mid-range DSLR at a tiny fraction of the size and weight. The big difference is pretty much all point-and-shoots are fixed wide-angle, so if you want to shoot animals or distant subjects you obviously need a DSLR.

I normally use a 4x5 but always keep a Ricoh GRII handy for backup and for something the size of your phone it’s a phenomenal camera, pic related.

The gear recommendations will depend on what you want to shoot, really. The problem with smartphones is that the sensor is tiny, so any small detail is lost. Combine this with post-processing they usually do (computational photography), and the end result looks like an oil painting made with small strokes when viewed on a large screen. As others have said, point and shoot cameras are not much better.
An interchangeable DSLR or a mirrorless camera will produce a much better result, and you can be flexible in regards to lens focal length to get photos that you want. Want wide landscape shots - get a wide angle lens, or even that Sirui anamorphic lens. Or even stitch panoramas from multiple shots taken with a tripod. Want to focus on something specific in a distance - get a zoom telephoto lens. Want to take portraits of people a few steps away from you with creamy bokeh backgrounds - get a medium focal length lens.
Most consumer DSLRs have an APS-C sensor which is more than enough for 90% of people. And they are usually the most reasonably priced. Some photographers use a smaller M4/3 sensor for landscapes because it blurs out smaller details, producing painting-like effect. And some swear by full-frame sensors to get improved light sensitivity and less distortion on wide angles. I've seen some amazing photos taken on medium format cameras - they really look close to the wide expanse seen with a naked eye - but those are terribly expensive.
Mirrorless cameras are slightly smaller than DSLR's. But I've climbed mountains with a bag with a couple of bodies and several lenses dangling on my ass, so I don't see the weight as much of a concern.
Price wise, you can get decent cameras for a few hundred bucks/euros, but your main focus should be on good quality lenses. It's better to have a good lens on a mediocre body than the other way around. Looking for second hand equipment will drive the price even further, and you'll be less upset if you smash them on a rock by accident.

I use a Fuji XT-2, the 18-55 mm lens, the power pack so that I have 3 batteries (you can also just carry fully charged ones with you), a collapsible tripod, neutral density filters, and a circular polarizer. If it's more than a few days I'll also carry a power bank.

I have a budget of about 1800 max. What are good DSLRs to consider? I'm okay with lugging around some weight, but I'd like to be able to take pics with elements (light precipitation and dust) and take pictures at events such as wedding, parties, etc.

Fuji is also good for weather sealing, provided you get a WR lens. A used XT2 or XT20 is cheap but lenses are a little pricey, dope cameras all around

Same here, $100% recommend getting some old minolta lenses on ebay for ~$30; I have a 70-210 f/4 and the 50mm f/1.7. Great sharpness and build and about the cheapest lens option you can get for it

It's cancer, don't do it. The whole setup weighs about 1.5 kilos which, when you're already carrying 12, feels like a lot. However I'm too autistic to buy and use a compact camera (muh full frame, muh >35mm focal lengths). I tried using a belt clip which is a meme because whatever strap it's attached to sags a lot with the weight of this camera.
If you're serious about it but you still want to be lightweight, I would suggest one of the Ricoh GR models, if you don't mind the smaller sensor and wide angle lenses. Pentax does other models intended for /out/ as well so their catalogue might be worth checking out (K-1 I can attest to its quality).
I'd like to upgrade to a medium format Pentax/Fuji or some large format at some point because I'm fucking retarded but also because larger sensor sizes really shine /out/. But at that point the photography becomes an activity in itself, you're no longer hiking/camping and snapping a few photos on the side, but actively pursuing it (waiting on top of summits for sunrise, positioning yourself perfectly to align with golden hour, etc). Only then is the weight justified.

The Pana TZ and Sony RX are pretty good cameras however you look at it.
I’ll often take one of those instead of carrying my brick full frame.

You should look at mirrorless digital cameras. They're less bulky. All the major brands have them now and they're really the future of digital. You don't have to get their brand new models that will most likely break the bank, but there's plenty of older models that work pretty well.

D90 user here. Still an alright camera considering how old it is. If you don't plan on upgrading anytime soon I would suggest some better quality lenses, it will make a huge difference.

i know its not vogue to say this but you can do a lot with an iphone camera. esp. with landscape shots. a lot of digital lanscape photography is composition, timing, and opportunity. aperture, shutter speed, and flash dont really have a ton of impact. the real perks come with being able to really isolate focal and blur points.

ive been working on my photos for about 3 years now and i'm just getting to the point where i am starting to "outgrow" my iphone camera. I should probably move on to a big boy camera, but i'm still getting more shots than i'm missing and at least half the shots i hate are because i took a bad photo.

The thing with smartphones is that you usually don't have enough control over the parameters. Sure there's raw mode on Samsung which is all right but I don't think anything like that exists on iPhone
