>>1840865>Silence. Silence is when you need to be worried. When you're out in the middle of nowhere and all the critters go completely silent at once, that's when you get scared. Because something is out there that everything else in the woods is scared of.My wife and I live with her parents on 50+ acres of land, mostly woodland, so I get to traverse the woods a lot. I went out with our dog last spring morel hunting, she was off leash but she kept pretty close to me, and it was fun watching her investigate every bush and tree and stuff.
At one point I had bent down to investigate a mushroom only for everything to just go quiet. Literally, it was like someone took a nature recording and just shut it off it was so quiet. I got back up and looked at my dog and she was staring off into an empty patch of woods. No growling, but she did look tense, and when I called her the first time she didn't respond.
At that point I decided I was done morel hunting (I didn't actually find any that time) so I turned around and called her again, to which she started following me again, though she kept turning around to look in the same direction every few seconds. After some walking I could hear the birds chirping again and everything seemed like it went back to normal, but I don't think I'll ever forget that one still moment.
Anyone have any idea what the fuck happened? Like, I always thought dogs were the type that if there's a spooky monster in the woods they'll immediately go into protective "growl until it goes away" mode, but the fact that even my dog just stopped making any noises was honestly the most frightening part of the whole scenario, especially since I KNOW she reacts to potential threats with growling and teeth bared and everything.
