Looking at bivvy tents right now as a great intermediate between the two. From what I can tell, they seem like a great intermediary. Relatively light weight, not overly large, just enough room for yourself and a few things, and relatively simple (no bells and whistles) which means its easier on the wallet. With that being said I'm looking at 3 and I want some feedback on which one I ought to purchase for 3 season backpacking:

Meaning it's far too small to be a usable tent and does't even have the compactness of a bivy to counter it. What's the point?

I already have a tent for car camping. Its too heavy to bring on the trail because I'm a manlet and can't carry a lot. An ultralight tent is too expensive imo. You're right about the compactness, but from what I understand an actual bivy is just not usable in the warmer season.

A friend from my hiking group had the Eureka (not sure if his had aluminum poles). He had condensation issues when the fly was closed but, yeah, of course he did. We’re in the Deep South, it’s humid as shit, and these can’t breathe. When there’s no threat of rain it is what it is; a tiny, bare bones shelter to keep the bugs away.

These things are barely any lighter than a proper 1 man tent. Id look closely at the weights before buying because I wrote of the idea of a bivy tent when I realized the weight savings were so small.

I have the ionosphere for solo trips and a shit decathlon home brand 3 man tent for if im heading out with friends or my gf
Its very heavy but for the price its decent, keeps me dry and is a simple set up

if it has poles, has 2 flies and requires guy lines then it's not a bivvy bag, it's just a really small tent.

you can buy literal proper 1 man tents which you can sit up inside which weigh less than these 'bivvy bags' you've posted.

Six Moon Designs is a reputable cottage vendor, though their one of the larger ones. I’m not sure if their products are still made in the US. That particular tent has various “editors picks” and “best of current year” awards.

It’s also a well made, well designed product. It will have decent stitching, gross grain reinforced pullouts, sturdy zippers, and just generally not be a piece of crap. This is absolutely a “get what you pay for” scenario. If you’re going /out/ often, you’ll be glad you have something decent.

Yes. The single pole pyramid design is ubiquitous among non-freestanding shelters. It’s not unique to this tent; it’s been around for a while and works well.

i had an earlier version of Eureka Solitare and it was great, used it for hundreds of nights.
Condensation was there but at that time I did not care and wasn't bothered by it, i just wiped it off in the morning.
These days I'd go with a hilleberg suolo or similar.

Thanks. That looks like a good tent (and to be honest I'm looking for more of a tent than a bivvy, hence my desire for an intermediary product). Only problem is I might not get it in time if its shipping from the UK and won't be in stock for another week.

if you want a 4 season tent look at geodesic style mountaineering tents. they aren't cheap though.

do you really need a 4 season tent? 4 season means extreme weather capable (80mph+ winds and heavy snowfall) are you really going to be camping in extreme weather?

they make chinese knock-offs of tents from various brands such as MSR and Big Agnes but they are pretty good knock-offs, well reviewed and a lot of people like them.

Not OP, but I came here because I do that and I'd like to upgrade from digging down into a snow drift and wrapping up in a poncho as a bivy.

Hey OP, id recommend against any Bivys...maybe contact an outdoor rental or guide and try one out first.

I hiked the AT in 2008 from GA to VT and got to directly and indirectly experience every type of shelter out there. Tent, bivy, hikers hammock, and ill tell you what I ultimately use now (its both cheap and highly minimalist).

I started with the eureka you mentioned and hated it. You will likely want to be able to sit up, esp if its raining for days or weeks straight and its your only refuge.

Next I switched to a tent- I had was a Big Agnes SL1...great tent, easy setup, fantastic company (any reputable outdoor company treats long distance hikers like royalty cus youre out there and have nothing else to do but gossip about gear with other hikers). I had a particular section of pole snap twice under tension and they overnighted a
pair of replacement poles to the next towns post office...however that section broke a 3rd time so I then decided to listen to the praise of the hammock fanatics..

Got a hennesy hammock. It was sweet but not *much* lighter than a tent and unless youre a back sleeper its a no go. I also found them much colder at night and a regular sleeping pad didnt seem that effective. Still think theyre sweet, you can set up anywhere you have a pair of trees and the terrain doesnt matter (no more worrying about rocks or roots or lumps)...

Finally i settled on the original advice of the guy who advised me to hike the trail and got a tarp shelter... all the benefits of a roomie tent with none of the drawbacks...you can get a silnylon tarp, use your trekking poles and a piece of parachute cord tied to trees or stakes for structure (i got a pair of aluminum ski poles for $25 bucks), get a cheap ground cloth (you can use a piece of tyvek from the hardware store for cents), and buy an insect screen to go inside...all this for well under $100 (easily under $50 if youre savvy).

It can all fit in a volume of less than a tennis ball tube and weighs nothing

and it came with 30 metal sticks and a double roof that weigths 5 kg.

Ionosphere fits me, (6ft) huge 90l back and gun if need be, not spaciously but you aren't going to be in a situation where you have to leave shit in the rain. It's also kind of free standingish, if you hook the poles into the fly it will not fly away and work as a shitty bivy if you don't stake it at all for some reason.

I used my ionosphere for the first time a couple of weeks ago just on an overnighter. Woke up with lots of moisture inside. I don't think I pitched it well enough.

Lunar Solo

Both are great designs that are about 200usd and come in at 1.5 lbs. Plenty of room to sit and change clothes inside, and have kept me dry through years of rainy camping

Snow insulates pretty well and the poncho keeps melted water off of me, dig the hole right and it keeps most of the wind out. I've not done that in extreme cold yet, only above 0F I think in the Twin Tiers. The only sub-zero winter camping I've done (that I'm aware of, I'm bad about checking the weather forecast and have a good cold tolerance) has been in a standard minivan without running heat at night, just kept cozy in my sleeping bags in the -30F plus whatever wind chill that was enough to rock the van back and forth in North Dakota.

I've had an Ionosphere for a couple of years now, it does have good and bad points most of which have been discussed in previous posts so I won't repeat but I will say it is a bit of a pain in the rear to get in and out of but if you use as intended as in sleeping not sitting around in you'll be fine.

I only really use mine in the winter when i want to hunker down in bad weather, for summer and warmer use I now just take my Thermarest Mesh Cot and a cheap surplas basha in case of rain.
