I love a good conifer.

Farmed corn in the US is almost exclusively genetically modified or selectively bred for more yield. Maize originated in mexico and even the US before anglos set out to modify them. You could find maize of all sorts, varieties and colors (blue, red, green, brown, black etc.) in the US before the anglos came. The corn farmed in the corn belt is all non native gmo cultivars, as with most of the crops farmed there. There are some rural farmers trying to bring back the original native cultivars of maize and beans in the southwest and Mexico.

Conifer is a division containing every species of pine, spruce, fir, cypress, etc.
A laymans definition off the top of my head would be trees and shrubs, with long needle like leaves, evergreen, conical-particularly in youth, they tend to favour subarctic and temperate zones, and reproduce via cones.
One can find examples that break all of these definitions, but as a basic idea of what a conifer is, I think it is okay.

The Cedar Swamps of Southern New England were the place where the Indians could massacre the colonists, and where they ended up building fortresses of solitude where they could not be attacked. The Great Swamp Fight was the final decisive victory by the colonists, who, with the help of Pequot and Mohegan guides, sacked and burnt the Narragansett fortress near the end of the way in 1675, killing thousands of women and children one night in the dead of winter. And in my hometown the forest behind my street is still called Cedar Meadow. Half of it was dammed and is now a lake but the murky cedar swamp still exists. We always thought of it as the haunted woods, it's eerie as fuck and maybe a thousand acres in total. There's a rough snowmobile trail through it that you can walk or mountainbike in summer. When me and my friends would campout we'd always walk through there at night. Spoops for everyone.

I will take a drive up there when things are more normal.
Last year I did some travelling around NZ, they also have temperate rainforests, and when doing some reading, discovered that Scotland also had them.

I googled metolious area, looks lovely. Wish we had as much forest cover here. Unfortunately our native woodland has been reduced to small isolated patches, it is expanding slowly though.
We really need a mass deer cull but, too many people are opposed to it (PETA types and the sporting estates who own most of the land and profit from maintaining unnatural numbers of red deer).

Though it has to be said the barren hills do have their own unique aesthetic.

If you have the time I really recommend doing the afrric Kintail way. imo it's the best long distance walk in Scotland.
Brilliant mix of terrain and scenery, and a lot quieter than the west Highland way.

I've done some searching online but most sites are similar to iNaturalist and don't teach how to identify non-obvious distinctions between species

I have picrel in my front yard. A Red Maple. The leaves are red in the spring and fall. Mine are not quite this bright but its still beautiful. Nice size tree. Not too big, not too small. Nice big leaves. Good for a little climbing.

There is only one way I know, go out there with an app or book that identifies trees, and then repeat the trees you have learned every time you see them. This is easier with deciduous trees obviously, but conifers do have clear markers if you know what to look for.

If you peel back the bark of a mature Ponderosa pine (with the orange bark), you will notice the distinct spell of the compound vanillin, which is, you guessed it, the same compound found in vanilla extract for baking. Never tried it with an immature Ponderosa (also known as a blackjack pine). I remember reading years ago that the Ponderosa pine is the second most harvested tree in America after the Douglas fir.

The pollen isn't that bad on desert junipers you don't even notice it and it still smells great. Juniper incense is probably my favorite kind of incense to.

You must be the only person alive that would make such a ridiculous statement. The junipers that cover a good bit of the pinyon-juniper scrublands of the desert Southwest are notorious for their pollen. I live in northern New Mexico and it is unbelievable how many people are allergic to it. You can literally see it covering the trees from a decent distance away. The trees turn brown in color and appear on their way to death until you realize it's just the pollen.

I've never had any problems with them and I live where they are most abundant in AZ. No one else I know has issues with them either. Their pollen blooms aren't really that strong here, maybe it's just differences between species since all the ones I'm around don't cause an issue even in spring.

I love grassland in that it really has the spirit of movement. It makes you just want to GO.

The disguised version looks better than the plain cell tower does. Loses some of that effect up close, but it's better than the alternative at any distance imo.

Wetland is very broad. Includes marsh, swamp, bogs, etc

Swamp is a forest with standing water
Marsh is a wet grassland
Bog have lots of soggy peat and usually moss

Not here. Already seeing an improvement in the woodland I thinned of Lawson cypress a while back. Cleared a few more this year just to give more space to the remaining broadleaf trees.

Many a hedge cut down and ground out that are no more as well. Did one recently.
