Alright there were some good discussions about wool fabrics this past winter.. In the court of my opinion, wool has been exonerated as decidedly un-memely. Round two, Summer edition - Linen

Is it the best fabric for humid climates? If so who makes the best value linen items?

Plz don't derail with discussion about your synthetic polyester garbage.

I generally treat summer clothing as disposable. Bought a whole mess of used Tasso Elba Hawaiian shirts (not obnoxious floral print though) for like 15/ piece when I got sick of having to have someone help peel my t shirts off of me after a day in the 90+% humidity. Orvis made some heavier linen shirts that are hotter, but well made.

Question: is your choice of a natural fabric an environmental, philosophical choice?

Linen is a great fabric, but I find it inferior to seersucker. And on summer days, I find synthetics superior to cotton-based fabrics.

If your preference for cotton is an environmental one: you can reduce the amount of microplastics derived from your clothes by hand washing and hang-drying, as well as using them as minimally-as possible.

Also, Black Lives Matter.

I wear merino in all conditions.
Heavy merino for winter.
Light merino for summer.
Merino dress shirts and suits for work.
It’s expensive as fuck but never smells bad. Doesn’t itch. Lasts ages.
No down side apart from price.

What i love about wool is how it doesn't hold water.. breathable and of course doesn't smell bad as readily as cotton and definitely not as bad as polyester and synthetics. What sort of brands for light summer merino?

I've started building a collection of merino tees (not baselayer style - looser fit classic tees with prints on the front). They're expensive at retail but if you buy them as you see them in sales you can get them at very reasonable prices.

I've got Lundhags and Smartwool tees in lightweight fabric (probably around 100gm) Cost about £20-30 each on sale.

I don't know about humid climates, but I always wear used white cotton oxfords when I hike in dry heat. I can usually find ones that fit too loose with a couple stains and/or small rips for under $5. they keep the sun off me, I can pop the collar for neck protection, and if there's a breeze I don't feel hot at all.

I’m in NZ, so there’s a heap of local brands. I’m wearing a “simply merino” T as I write this.
If I want something really smart, or heavy for winter I’ll buy Icebreaker. Exceedingly expensive though.
General hoodies n shit for outdoors I get MacPac. Bought on sale it’s good bang for buck.

Correct, missed this post sorry. Temp here rarely gets over 24c.
Also, Rodd and Gunn for dress wool gear. It’s largely Cashmere instead of Marino, but you’re only wearing it /out/ on the town or to work.

Gardener in North Scotland here. Working outdoors all winter means it doesn’t matter what I wear to walk anywhere above 10C, I will be sweating like a bitch. So I wear an XXL linen shirt for the long sleeves (fly protection) and the ability to open the front to air my chest. Also the collar gives some extra fly and sun protection.

It can absorb my sweat for hours and then be comfy and smell neutral after it dries out. It’s not too cold either. I wouldn’t go /out/ in anything else. T shirts mean bites all over your arms, a sunburned neck and no heat retention when you need it, other long sleeve shirts make you sweat more and can’t be opened.

TLDR linen is the best, I wear linen pants too, also for cool-ish fly protection.
