Obviously with all the events canceled, plenty of time for small treks and working on kit. What have you added or upgraded lately?

How hardcore do you people actually get when you're not behind a keyboard? No offense but I have my doubts. Most I do is bring my rifle and sidearm with me despite not liking hunting. I don't quite understand what you're trying to say, but historic camping is, and has been a popular hobby for a long while, and has a huge spectrum of people who do various degrees of fidelity for different reasons. Obviously, this thread mostly caters to people on the more historically accurate/progressive interpretation end of the scale.

Personally, when I do historic events or historic campouts, I do so to the best of my ability and supplies. If I'm doing 18thC, I'm gonna be in my good wool repro blanket on the ground, eating salt pork, local forage etc, because it's part of the experience. I personally try to make very few concessions, like the above mentioned use of stainless rather than tinware. If I'm at a LARP, I use my 15th/16thC camping kit because it's thematic and immersive.

Some people camp at LARPs in nylon, because they don't have the kit yet. Some people eat canned food at a buckskinning rendezvous because they don't have the skills yet. Some people want more. Some people are happy with less.

Is it that way everywhere in the US? I know 18 states are in the red zone most with mandatory mask policies, but surely some states are lower risk with social distancing going on.

Let's be real, any event that is scheduled before the fall should be considered canceled. Even after that, it's questionable based off of what happens in the fall. All of the bigger events, ran by reputable people, have already either announced cancelation, or will cancel within a month of their date.

Any person who's willing to continue to run an event during a global pandemic it's simply put a dangerous idiot. things are risky enough as they are, not taking into account primitive historic hygiene situations, and close quarters.

Otherwise it's your call. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together can just consider this year wash, and focus on either small group excursions or working on their kit.

My museum, as a state operated national and international attraction, basically has us on indefinite furlough for the year, with possible reassessment in September. I hate it, but completely agree with it.

That's my 3 cents.

Not sure if I quite fit the bill for this thread but I've working on a plan for this fall and winter. It serves no purpose other than it tickles my particular autism. I want to complete my entire hunting and ice fishing season in a full greatest generation/boomer post-war LARP, not even joking. So far I've aquired a fishing pole with Diawa reel from the 70s, I have a bunch of denim, flannel, wool clothes and a classic leather hiking boot from L. L. Bean and I even thrifted an external frame pack but I think it's from the 80s. I got a .30-30 for deer and black bear, my grandfather's actual single shot 12g from the 60s for pheasant and rabbits. I don't have a classic .22 yet and I can't use the shotgun for ducks because old single shots with fixed chokes don't agree with modern steel shot. I've aquired time period appropriate books on tracking, fishing and taxidermy to give more authenticity (pic rel), where I'm struggling is on bringing a smart phone with me in the field. On one hand I want the genuine experience but on the other should an emergency arise I'd like some added security.
Gonna get a good trucker hat somewhere soon and probably a case of Coors banquet to celebrate any successful hunts or fishing trips. Thoughts, opinions or tips on this concept in general?

Here is my daily wear LARP out gear. I do mostly 1750's French&Indian war and portray a French Trader/ milita. I also have done tall ship festivals as a crewmen and after a little wheeling and dealing and squaring away my passport I joined the crew and we sailed to Cuba for a week.

Ive posted my gear previously a while ago. Im still working on acquiring a nice frock coat.

Most of my gear came from fur trade shows, just Google when and where there are tons around my state. All the old timers are selling off their stuff for very reasonably prices. Like my french stuff sack that everything is laid out on top of was $35, it also doubles as a nice sleeping bag after stuffing in the Hudson Bay blanket. My cooking pail can was $5 at an antique store, haversack was $15, so on and so forth. Clay bottle came from goodwill for a buck. I think I have about $700 total in this impression. Most of these old timers love to hear someone else is showing interest and wanting to carry the touch. You get good deals too because they know it will continue to be used and cared for. I recommend etsy and Jan Townsends &Sons, fantastic can't recommend enough. Crazy crow trading co is another.

What it came down to is 3 things
- Everything should have more than one use.
- Fire is essential, have flint and steel on you and in every pack
- Resources anything you could possibly need around you and form with basic tools

i like to go straight primitive my self. i bring a woolblanket pack, gather stuff, and make what i want/need. i dont keep the things i make, always returned to the earth were i got them.
flint napping is hard, and i need a teacher.
bows making has gotten better by simply know where supplies can be found.

my over all goal is to go up north to Washington and spent a whole month primitive living with a group up there. but its hard to find buck skin to makes cloths, and i still have a lot to learn and not many people to learn from.

Ive seen some shit happen at reenactments and Rendezvous. The amount of drunken shenanigans that happen at those events after the public leaves would astonish you. Like at a military show in Wisconsin the German reenactors found a tractor and humped it because it was quote the sluttiest tractor they saw.

When I'm doing medieval era outdoor stuff I always wear my chainmail, sure it slows me down but you never know when an enemy on a horse could loose an arrow at you through the trees.

Likewise when I am doing Japanese Shogun era camping I always have some shuriken to catch wild quarry with and pic related to keep cool innawoods

I exclusively play evil characters, since no ones else does it, so much so that ive been hired as an NPC/staff member to play them on a greater scale. What usually happend is im constanly driven out of town the good boy "police" and im forced into the life of banditry. Which is pretty based since with the ingame currency you can buy hearty delicious meals at the tarven so that what I end up doing cut some dude throat take his money and buy some chicken run into the woods then sleep under some canvas tarp tent deep and hiden from my would be bounty hunters. Funny thing is I got hired as an npc after I kidnaped and ransomed a 12-14 yrs old kid to his father.
Truth be told I started getting /fit/ only to larp harder

Don't get me wrong, cast candles are nice, but there is nothing wrong or farby with dipped, especially if you're not buying import/industrial produced (like say, someone on a trapping expedition buying from locals)

When I was a child and up to my adolescence I used to do historical reenactment, from roughly 5 yo to 15. My dad was big into it and my mom an awesome dressmaker who built all our stuff. My dad was an historical expert on the periods he was interested in reading a ton of books on the subjects, and we worked out even small details of the costumes or era's life. We used to do American civil war, a few Napoleon campaigns and WW2. When I was younger I had a few sets of full gear:
+ For american civil war, we had different areas one acting as a small town sort of area where the moms and child would stay, I would usually act as a sort of farmer boy or generally helping around the house. Later on, I did a few reenactments as a young soldier.
+ For WW2, I used to be a young schoolboy and hitch a ride on soldier's big trucks, tanks, or whatever people were driving (as a parade after the fights).

Both of these were really cool. I've not done anything in over 10 years now but maybe I should look into it again.

Porcelain pipes appeared around the 18th cent. (same as clay) so if your reenactment falls in there, they're perfect. But to be honest, I can't really see someone walking around smoking one of these outside their home. But porcelain lasts a long time so if you really want one go for it.

I hate this pop history myth. Colorfast black leather was incredibly common from the 15thC onward, as a result of iron and carbon residue availability from the increase of iron and steel production.

You ever make 17thC shoe black? It's literally made with kitchen leavings.

Based vaguely on a Dutch produced piece, and I don't know the maker. I got it in a trade a few years ago in Florida while participating in Drake's Raid. It was black when I got it, but I prefer a polish.

...except by the Renaissance, it isn't, as mentioned. The interpretation that black leather dye was expensive goes against recorded documentation in both art and writing, and is the same BS as "everyone in history wore only brown", due to the degrading of dye pigment over the centuries.

A great example: Almost every Mary Rose leather artifact tested for dermal impregnation of iron and carbon, especially the sailor's and other "low class" shoes. Hell, most still look pretty good if they were subsumed in the silt.

My late 15th/early16thC surgery. Still a work in progress.

My tools are based off of Heironymous Braunscheig's 'Handbuch der Wundartzt', 1497. The glass is all reproductions of pieces found from the Mary Rose, blown at the Jamestown Glass works.

Titanium is actually pretty ass. Doesn't hold an edge and while it by weight it is stronger than steel it will have a higher volume, which also makes cutting through things more difficult. Obsidian holds a good edge but is brittle like glass, not going to stand up to the abuses a sword needs to. A modern steel alloy is likely what would be the best option currently. There's some work on glasslike metals going on right now that has some potential, but unfortunately the answer at this time is not some crazy exotic material.

bleach it white and look up how to make green dyes

soak it in the dye and leave it there for a couple days to absorb the green
