Back in 1953 my grandfather was issued a pair of wool socks by the Army while stationed in Alaska. These wool socks where used for every duty you could think of at the base, marching, guardkeeping, daily duties etc; but most importantly, keeping his feet warm. He has since passed these socks down to my father who has worn them to dances, ski-ing, and more. My father passed them on to me to help make my boots fit tighter when I went to my first homecoming. I will pass these socks onto my son when he reaches the age too.

H2O and detergents are ineffective solvents at capturing and dispersing odorous defecation compounds, which is why if you've ever got dog shit on your hand or foot, the smell persists despite washing it for 10 minutes straight. wool doesn't accumulate stink like cotton. It just doesn't. It's probably to do with the inherent antibacterial qualities of fur, which needs to dry quickly and be resistant to bacteria to preserve the health of the animal. Cotton, on the other hand, doesn't have to be antibacterial. It's evolutionary role is to help seed dispersal and probably also functions as a moisture retaining device for seed germination benefits as well. It's probably more advantageous if the cotton fibers DO retain water and DO absorb organisms because it would aid in seed germination.

Looking at this from a logical perspective, socks will get stained at the same rate they're getting worn out, so I really don't see how that 67 year figure makes any difference (except pointing to the fact that those socks really haven't been worn much, comparatively speaking.)

Oh trust me, they've been worn. I almost didn't believe my grampa when he told me how much they have been worn. They truly just dont make stuff like they used too. He still uses a Thermos brand thermos he won in a raffle back in 1967 and it looks nearly mint despite the fact he uses it pretty much weekly.

Your grandad most definitely is either lying or he thinks they have been used much more than they have. There's a reason knowing how to repair socks used to be a skill you couldn't live without unless you were rich. Socks will simply wear out due to abration on the fibres if used much and will either require repair or replacement.
A thermos isn't worn mechanically the same way clothes are so him using a thermos that is ancient is believable although he must have babied it since old ones have glass insides which brake if you drop them.
