I’m the kayak poster. Cost me about USD$100 for board. Already had wetsuit etc. Taking educated guess, $500 will easily get you kitted with decent gear in US.
In my experience, if you can snowboard and WW kayak, you can surf inside an hour.
I guess it depends on your transferrable skills.

What’s the general area your gonna surf in? Depending on where and when u may need a wetsuit. For a board I’d recommend renting an 8ft foamie a few times from a local surf shop. Learn the basics On a beginner board before u buy a board. Since your gonna have the basics down you can get an intermediate board. What’s your height and weight?

So for now you don’t need anything more than some board shorts and a rash guard if you want. If your a total beginner who’s never surfed before I’d suggest getting a long board around 8 ft long. If you can pop up and ride down a line pretty consistently you can transition into a fish board if you want to. With smaller boards it’s more dependent on your height and weight and skill level to determine the correct sized boards. Good luck anon

Also I’m retarded I didn’t answer your question. To be cheaper buy used, if not buy new. You can expect to spend about $150-600 for a first board depending on if you buy used and how much you are willing to spend

im 6ft and the board is 7'2
width is also important
the wider it is the more stability it will give you
