i used to be big into it back in my teens but stopped as real life happened
friends and i went to skirmish i.o.n. like 7 years in a row
i finally have the time and money to get a good setup and get back into it

was on some church youth group retreat thing in italy as a kid, and apparently they didnt give a fuck about what we did on the land so we rented all the paintball equipment and just went into the woods. two teams left the center mark at the same time going opposite directions, then turned around after 10 or 15 minutes or something to start.
id only ever played at established places that are never that big, and it was great to have to sneak through deep forest not knowing when you would actually find the other team.

God I used to. Miss it a ton too. Had a whole crew of my best friends from back home. Too bad people move, and fields close.
Was after I fucked off for school, but one of the stories I still hear when we're together is this time they played "SWAT vs. Drug dealers". Field had an oil field camp shack that was the main part for this game. Drug dealers stuck inside with one life each. Swat had infinite, but had to actually get inside and clear every room. Apparently someone chucked a smoke grenade in the trailer, a drug dealer managed to toss it back out, so swat chucked another two inside. Whole place was full, some kid with asthma needed out, the last couple players were huddled behind a small counter, and it sounded like an all out shitstorm of fun.
Wish I was there.

Have been curious of any major innovations or cost reductions over the years... last time I looked into it years ago there was some interesting feed design that was like a corkscrew fed tube underneath the barrel that force fed the paintballs mechanically without an impeller and didnt have the profile disadvantage of a top mounted hopper...

Thought it was cool as I was always a minimalist that never used up all his ammo... seems like speedballers still dump massive paint and use hoppers.

Be cool to find a group again and reinvest someday.

I loved all the scenario games outdoors... VIP variants where you have to escort an unarmed player from point A to B with the opposing team just trying to shoot them... "predator" variants where someone gets extra hits or can only be eliminated with a shot to a certain area... Defend the Base, where one team hunkers down and the other needs to claim a flag behind the fort... so much fun.

Wed play all day maybe once a month at someones house with land and parents would order pizza and all that. Be dead tired at the end of the day. So much fun.

It’s a niche thing now. I played a lot of tournaments back in its prime back in 03-06. It did alright until 2008 when the recession hit it couldn’t stay afloat. It gained a little popularity again in 2011-2013 but lost most of its steam again and kind of just has the title of expensive hobby to those outside of the sport. It probably won’t ever gain the momentum it had again. Fields that are open now tend to cater birthday parties and church youth groups.

Tl;dr Kind of but not like 15-20 years ago.

I think most the old brands markers I knew are pretty much gone. I think Tippmann still around, and maybe Spyder or Empire or whatever. But the last time I went I didn't recognize fuck all for markers there.

I work at a paintball site, and yeah Tippman is what we use as the cheap rental guns.It's alright, but I prefer airsoft, purely because airsoft works better with my style of play (which involves carrying a shotgun (or if its VERY up close, a sword) on my back and a bayonet on my rifle). Funny. I paintballed, and friends and I played with nerf swords, some shields, and other melee shenanigans all the time. I'd say Tippmann is still the trusty old brand everyone knows, and used once. Hell I'd still be using an old Tippmann pump if I was playing. Never got rid of my gear.
Did always think the dick waving between airsoft, and paintball was dumb. They're niche enough to be in danger of dying. Bitching about each other was just dumb.

Because smartparts sued everyone out of business when their patent on their “electronic marker”. Every major label got sued at the team from Viking, WDP(Angel), DYE, to Boblong. It was a huge mess and Dynasty ended up having to leave WDP and played for Smartparts as part of a settlement. Fuck SP.

When Smartparts got approved on their patent they basically had a legal team ready and turned the market on its ear. The shocker also because amazingly popular due to its smaller profile and between those 2 things it became hard for companies to keep up. A lot of popular companies closed their doors because of it. The politics of it were also really draining. I remember back in 06 I was 18 and wanted to buy a V-Force profiler from Nation Paintball but they only had yellow ones and when I asked why they all looked at me like I was a fucking retard because apparently their contract went out and I, being a player, was apparently supposed to just know this stuff. I didn’t. Didn’t care and didn’t buy anything from their stand. I do miss some of the stuff but it was just drama and drama doesn’t stay in business.

I still remember the first time I ever went as a little twelve year old girl. Field we went to didn't use Tippmanns, but I think Piranhas as rentals, and fuck me those were nice. For mechanical, I remember being able to walk the trigger just fine. Least as well as my kid brain remembers. Did the usual, and got the 98C with the mask after. Good deal till we did a big Action Village order too. Had a Spyder RS, and I thought that was the neatest shit. That, and their electronic hopper that was under a hundred bucks but could still output like 30 Balls a second. Also had a remote line. Turns out not having a stock on a paintball gun really doesn't matter much. And the size/weight while being able to spray fuck tons one handed is damn fun.

I remember only once did I see an Angel in action. That was neat, I think they were these mythical top of the line things my friends and I only imagined.

Piranhas weren’t mechanical. They weren’t the high end electronic lines but they weren’t the no frills mechanical either. They were decently nice for what they were and relatively($125 or so) cheap. I almost bought one before I started playing tournaments but ended up with an Angel A4 instead. Changed my life and not for the better.

Airsoft is definitely smaller, if you count all those recreational places where common peeps rent the paintball stuff for a day of fun with family, co-workers etc

Isn't airsoft and paintball dead. Airsoft reached its peak in the beginning of 2010-12 and then just fell flat on it's fucking face lmao. Paintball died because of the elitist attitude 90% of the players had, which limited the amount of people entering the sport, and as such is just fading.

Last shit I heard about paintball was 50 cal being the new thing, and I think that failed last I heard. Even Mike from TechPB doesn't even make videos anymore. Shit is dead.

Most fields near military bases are owned by former military or subsidized by the govt for training. They can also get deals on old military training equipment and end up buildIng large forts.
Personally I prefer straight-up woodsball where only natural formations provide cover.

Use to play 1-2 times a week before the local comfy field closed because the owner wanted to raise the price on paint. His whorebag of a daughter for some fucking reason lead a boycott against him which all the regulars and her orbiters followed. Uh thread related. My parents actually had my old room redone so I went home and cleaned out my old closet of stuff I hadn't touched in awhile. Turns out my old back with the ghetto blaster 98c still gas 2 c02 tanks that are full for like a decade. I wouldn't risk it. IIRC you're suppose to throw those Co2 tanks out every 5 years. Id check with your city or fire department and see if there's a dropoff disposal. Co2 tanks are cheap to replace anyways.
