Am I right in thinking these are the top three items in survival?

In Dave Canterbury's 5 Cs surely cover and cordage would be relatively easy to improvise compared to making a knife, metal container, or fire steel from wild materials. Am I wrong?

Stainless steel knife?

Almost every survival expert I've ever heard on the subject suggests a high carbon steel knife. Not hard to keep rust off them with a little care.

oh for fuck sake, stop with the blanket statements. stainless is fine for outdoor and survival purposes. a stainless like 12C27M, 13C26, 420HC, and even 440A (if clean mix, both oil/cryo quench) can be tougher than plain high carbon steels and hold a significantly better edge. stainless gets a bad name from high carbide fraction shit like 440C and shitty quality Chinese 440A that was air hardened with no cryo, resulting in a ton of retained austenite. using a stainless with high quality heat treatment and as close to optimum carbon saturation as possible, is the key.

I carry a 500ml cup filled with satchets of powered drink flavour stuff and 1100ml pan, which when not in use holds all the stove accessories + KP stuff.

In survival mode I guess you'd have less but I don't figure why I'd get stuck somewhere without my bag and somehow still have my cup with me so it's academic anyway.

If you're a hunter, whittling or a fishing, you need knives for those purposes. Otherwise, a knife is a rarely-used tool that's worth having, but not that important.

A metal container? I mean... like a pot for boiling water? Yeah, I suppose. I'd usually rather have a bottle.

Firestarting crap? You mean a couple bics in a ziploc, right? No? Right--that's 'cuz you're a wannabe, rather than an outdoorsman.

Preparing food. Cutting things, like string. cleaning fingernails. Do you need more? Fucking hell, do you not have any cutlery in your house? Do you live on nothing but fucking ramen and freeze dried food in the woods?

if you ONLY have one container, it SHOULD be a metal water bottle.

And you've never had to start fire with a wet lighter. (because hey, ziplocs are impervious to thorns!).

If you don't need either for a very specific purpose (cleaning an animal, carving wood, whatever), then it's just a part of your grab-bag of objects. And if you think that is some cornerstone of outdoors tools, it's probably because you're not outdoors very often. A pot's a pot. A knife is a knife. We all have these things at home, all bring them, and only people who are kinda douchie and not outdoorsie think that these are magical pieces of an equipment list.

These survivalist lists are self-congratulatory wish-lists. They aren't about outdoors activities. They're stamp collecting.

Had to rethink this. If, and only if, I'm car camping with not-outdoors-people friends? Then I need a knife. That's honestly the last situation in which I can think of a knife coming in handy, when it wasn't a fishing trip (for which you want a specific knife for a specific job, rather than because X Type of Knife is tacticool).

Survival is an outdoor activity, whether for real or training.

Camping, backpacking, hiking, climbing and canoeing are other outdoor activities.

Saying that survival, in general, is not an outdoor activity is like saying that judo is not a sport, it's just about people training for pretend fantasy fights that never happen, and if a person wanted to defend themselves they should get a gun or pepper spray anyway (just as if saying someone should take a tent and a gas stove rather than making fires or improvised shelters).

If you want to sleep in an improvised lean to or a drum liner then fine.

If you want to cook your dinner in your kitchen then fine.

If you want to cook your dinner on an open fire you made and lit with a bow drill then that's also fine.

To each their own. You may simply like to enjoy the outdoors and not want to practice such minimalism.

You may even be right that people who discuss outdoor survival spend more time in a basement than you do, on average. However survival practice and theory exists and the sticky says it's /out/ related. So your fascist attitude is inexcusable really.

Either ignore it, or contribute to the matter being discussed, or campaign to get survival removed from the sticky.
