Hat looks fine anon. Maybe a little bit christmas elf-y.
I wear a barbour waxed cap, has the visor and earflaps that go all the way round the back of the head. Lined with some kind of fleece. Pretty comfy and waterproof, the visor keeps rain/bug net/hood off the face.
But what I'd really like to find is something like pic related. Anyone know what this kind of hat is called? a Capeline hat?

I had a buddy of mine give me his authentic Aussie slouch hat from the military, I wore that thing until it became tatters. Recieved lots of compliments from outdoorsy chicks that wanted to gargle my sailors.

European military ski hats are pretty sweet. The face shield folds down and is very practical. I lost mine on a heller of a snowshoe/ mountain climb where I broke trail the whole way. Was too tired to go back for it at 11pm when I realized it fell off of my pack

The irony is they’re not popular because of marketing, not in spite of it. Everyone has pushed jackets and pants for decades because they assume everyone is hiking at high altitude in alpine or temperate mountains. It’s a pure West Coast mindset, meanwhile everyone else buys into that bullshit and sweats in the rain. Just as jackets and pants have a place, so do umbrellas.

Yes, and then in 1999 GoLite decided to expand some of their market capture and invent a trail use for a cumbersome, one trick pony and market it as legit hiking/trekking gear. Don't you think it's strange that umbrellas have been around for centuries but no-one thought to bring one along when going /out/?

Just ordered this panty dropper myself.

I personally don't like hats myself and never wore them out east when I'd hike in PA, VA and MD cause it was always in the woods where there was a lot of shade. In SoCal now and there is considerably less cover. If I hike out in the desert...absolutely zero and you fucking bake.

My gf will probably hate it but whatever. I fucking hate dropping money on sunscreen all the time.

It depends: are you an 18thC sailor? Realtalk, I wear my liberty cap furring the winter, both in and out of historic clothes. It's pretty generic and no one who doesn't know will care.

However, I’ve started using a buff/neck gaiter. The fact that it’s a soiboi ultralight fag accessory aside, it’s multifunctional, lightweight and packs small. It’s a beanie, a scarf, an eye mask (for sleeping), a full-face sun cover, all in one.

But a Tilley is a very nice hat.

If you can find one on sale or something, the wool buffs are a whole other level of usefulness. You might not want to use the wool one in 30C+ but it works as a towel, and is good for the winter.

The neck piece thankfully detaches if you want it to so it can convert into a ball cap essentially. But yea, I look forward to being able to go into the desert and not getting burned alive.

I’ve never heard a compelling argument against umbrellas for desert hiking, and it sounds appealing for the summer weather in the South. I lived in Alabama for a while and the summer weather is supper sketchy, like really scattered all over the place, and it never cools down.

I wouldn't buy a new one. They sold out a few years ago, and aren't made of rabbit fur proper anymore. I'm fellow aussie with a territory, and an older KFF hat that a mate gave me from his enlistment days. They're good hats, and there's a damn good reason everyone uses them or their design, but it depends on what you want to do with it. It's also about normal for that price

Nice, i have an offset headlamp that shines over the side of the brim. what its actually particularly useful for is this banded set of eye protection i use for shooting or cycling or what have you. pulls over pretty easily

My friend's go to hat is one of these hats. Someone in our group found this hat in the water downstream of the hoover damn in the Colorado River. Its pink and faded but the story behind it is pretty cool.

Does anyone know a good place to get campaign hats? Stetsons will run you upwards of $200, ebay is really hit or miss and they're still very expensive due to shipping. I've tried looking in local surplus stores and they run around $60 there. Is the best I can do or are there other places that carry them cheaper?
