Weather is mild, hovering around 5-10c (though obviously it can and does get much much colder on the hills). It can get quite a bit warmer too if you get good sun.
Scenery is at it's peak with autumnal colours and snow capped mountains if you're lucky.
Try avoid mid-october as school holidays run 12th-23rd.
Last week in october is a good shout, in my opinion.
