I'm just back from a 7 day hike in the Pyrennees, I took a few photos for you guys. Pic related the stats, I let from Bidarray and followed the track anti clokwise in 6 stages (+1 one day rest)Bidarray- St Etienne de Baigorry -Aldudes- Urepel -Banca- Saint Etienne de Baigorry and back to Bidarray at the end

There's one a t the top, you can barely seehim. It was hot as balls, up to 37C/98 F, the heat really impaired me, I'm used to rain but when it's that hot it feels like everything my bofy stops working properly, short breath, the slightest effort has me pourring down, hard to eat. At least near the top there is a little breeze

Here a pic from the summits on day 1. Every day the hike would start and in a village (I camped just outside but I needed the water, everything was bone dry and most streams are dried up in this season) I'd start at arond 300m in the morning,go up for a few hours 'til arounf 90m-1000m, then yoyo up and domn along the ridglines until 4-5pm, then down for another hour or two to next village

Taking a rest after getting out of a tight spot. I misread my gps, and followed what I tought to be a livestock path down a really steep slope, more ore les through the bushes. It turns out it had been following the mark of a sheep most likely fell/tumbled down the slope, as the opening in the bushes over a cliff, and I saw it's bones 20m lower. I was not a nice moment for me. I managed to find a flat spot to stop and regroup, because there was no forward, and going back up seemed near impossible. First of all I decided to cool down and take no decision while rushed and saweaty. So I took a shit (don't ask me why, felt like it, did wonders lmao), had some food and water. By then I was thinking more calmly, I decided to dump as much weight as I could and see if i could climb back up (I had 8 days worth of food and all my camping gear, roughly 17kgs with water). I threw away 4kgs of home made hig-cal muesli (half the calories planned for the trip) and the water I had left. That + the food I ate there and then+ the shit had me lighter by a solid 6-7 kgs, and I turned around to go back up. Turns out it was way easier going up than down. The physical effort was intense, but the bushes offered a good solid grip and it was way easier to find proper footing facing the slope than going down with my back to it. It took me another hour to get back up, exhausted but euphoric, this is whan I took the pic

Surise on the morning of day 2, after loosing 2 hours the night before I had a miracle by fing a spring pouring into a large tub for cattle one hour before St Etienne de Baigorry. So I stopped there and the, had the best bath of my life, loads of fresh spring water, and walked the extra hour the next morning

Going the the woods on the way up day 2. The woods where the favirite part of the day for me, one you brake out above the tree line around 900-1000m, then it's 100% sun for 4+-5 hours , during the hottest hours of the day, which really impaired me. It actually got me reconsidering my future hikes. From now on, I'll do my summer hiking up North (Ireland, Scotland, Norway, etc..) and I'l go south in spring or autumn. Summer heat in the South is too much for me. I'm half Breton, half Irish, built for wind and rain, but I'm a pussy when it comes to heat

on day 3 I decided to take a day of rest. The heat +extra 2 hours had been intense, and I was there to enjoy the mountains, not just pursue some performance. I hike a lot, all around Europe, and for me the food and places are as much a part of it as the physical side of it. A little restaurant cauht my eye so I decided to make a day of it. I woke up late, took a stroll around the village after hiding my stuff, then did some laundry by the river and scrubbed myself before lunch

Lamb oxoa (a basque dish, miced meat with spice) with potatoes and piment d'Espelette, and wine of course (the cheapest botlle which tends to be my favorite wherever I go)

Probably the best part of the whole hike. The track I was following had been drawn by a local hiking club, and that whole mormning was on a tiny track of the mainn routes, in 4-5 valleys of pure un-interrumpted forest, I really felt like being alone in the woods far from everything

previous pic is back on the GR main track after leaving the woods, the GR 10 really has great views, and it's as easy as it gets to follow, but you see more people. I'll post more later on if you guys like the pics, but I have to go

camp set up by the river in Banca, notice during the night I had set up close to an ant colony, said fucl it, moving everything bothered me more than a few bites. Neat trick for insects, get yourself some essential oil (anything works, ylang ylang has the less opressive smell) and slather yourself in it, the smells pushes critters away. Only thing is it doesn't "hold as well and commercial anti bug cream, ùmax 2 hours, and washes off right away with sweat. But whan setting up camp you can douse it over your floor mat (I use a 5€ poncho, that doubles as back up raingear) and it'll keep bugs away from you and your stuff

You know these moments where you say to yourself "take a mental snapshot of this, keep it as a memomry of this time and place in your life" I t was that kind of moment for me, the perfect fresh breeze, that endorphin high following an intense effort, plus that mountain made me think of the cover of Nietzche "Thus spoke Zarathoustra" the whole fuckery felt very self-defining for some reason. I like a lot of differentsports but only mountain hiking gives these little moments of trancendance, I guess the fact you can stop to ejoy them plays a role compared to more fast-paced activities

Afternoon was grim weather, but the best I felt the whole time, there were showers of rain and wind, I felt like a flower in the desert opening up after water, everything became easier, my mind felt sharper, pace picked up, bag felt weightless, I felt I could wlak for days on end in thet type of weather

after that last pic I entered 3 hours of pure hell, the track I was following hadn't been used for years, I ended up following faint traces of a track through thick bushes of thorns and overgrowth in a super narrow and damp steamy little valley, it felt like the jungle, with swarms flies going in my nose and eyes as i wacked my way through all that shit with my walking sticks, sweating buckets. and watching out to not step over the edge hidden by all the plants It took me 2 hours + to clear 3kms. I was to tired and enraged to take pictures

After that I arrived back to Bidarray where Ihad left my car. I went for a good swim and deep soaping, got changed to clean clothes, then farted around for two days eating and drinking, and then came back home.
Next long one will probably be Black Forest in Autumn, 10 days. I'm probably going to get laid off in September due to post Covid, and I have vouchers from a flight I took for the black Forest in april, which i had to cancel. So if I do get fired, I'll take the opportunity and I'll do another thread, this time from Pforzheim to Baesl, along the Westweg. See you then, /out/ !

I brought all my food initially but had to dump half of it to get out of a tight spot.
Usually I plan 3kcal per day, half of which i take as a muesli I mâle myself ( oats, almondsz, raisins, full fat powdered milk). The rest I buy on site before starting, usually a local cured meat and hard cheese

I see what you mean. They were taken with an Iphone, maybe a combination of dirt or damp on the lens plus very white light (these two were taken around midday) I'm not a pro, but I definitely see the CGI on the white of the tree trunk. Light in the valley itself had someting a bit eerie, for me it's the dampness rising from the woods after light rain the night before, getting hit by the very crude light from the ridgeline
