People will say this is bait, but I'd say montana, wyoming,california, and colorado are the best 4 in that order; they all have some good areas and some shitty areas. The area inbetween (nevada, utah, arizona, part of idaho) are good, but those would be a step down.

Explain. The Tetons are gorgeous and all but huge areas of Wyoming are just the high plains. Utah has a lot more varied terrain. I'd switch the two.

I'm pretty biased as a California native, but we take the cake for everything besides hunting. We got all the top-tier nat'l parks, the JMT, the FUCKING CALIFORNIA COAST for camping, and so forth. hunting, I'd say can go to Texas or Montana.

But in general Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Montana are pretty high tier. Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia are always great. Alaska, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, and California have some great parts.

Lived in Arkansas, NY and California and Alaska very briefly.

Arkansas is great as far as hunting and the sort of "do whatever you want" sort of /out/, cheap land etc.

California has national parks out the ass and fair weather almost all the time. Big fan of Joshua Tree.

Northern NY gets props just for Adirondack Park.

Alaska is just obvious.

tho the mountainous parts of pa/tn/nc/ga are nice too!

wv is super underrated because people think of only the west coast states as out and its not quite as high up/popular as the smoky mountains so its pretty uncrowded except for local/regional visitors

Hmmm, well I may be a bit biased but I think the East Coast has some amazing out capabilities. Namely North carolina (Appalachian Rain Forest, Great Dismal Swamp). And Florida is just one giant swamp waiting to be explored.

None of those places drop to -30f in winter or have a true continental climate, and california lacks large flat high elevation (1+ miles ASL) plains/plateaus/badlands which every western state except for CA, WA, HI, and AK have. Everything pictured in that post is over 5,000 ft, receives 40-300 inches of snow in winter, and has a true continental climate that can drop below 0f for half the year which isn't quite the same as anything in CA.

The real perk of WV is affordable land. It's also hunting friendly but that's not too special amongst other Appalachian states. I'd also throw in some of the best sport climbing in the world.

With its easily accessed calm water bayous, Louisiana has to top the list for kayak fishing.

You can load it up on top of any vehicle and launch into any body of water, which is basically anywhere. And it’s not tiny ass trout or whatever the fuck; you can catch big ass red snapper, drum, sheepshead... it’s all brackish and easy to get to. Pretty great. Brutal heat in the summer though. Low temps are barely below 80 at 6am this time of year.

It still hasn’t really caught on because most people just own a boat of some kind and are content with that.

For whatever reason (hint: winter) Montana has basically gone on as the least multicultural place in the western world. Even beating out places like Czechia and Hungary, which are notoriously mistrusting of any outsider. If you isolate the reservations it is something like 98% non-hispanic white. Even places like Idaho and Utah have diversified but Montana just refuses to, at this point there's no indication it ever will.
