They bite their host and feed for a while on bodily fluids, but unlike mosquitoes you don’t notice the bite until hours later. It’s also very rare to have a single bite; the victim is almost always covered in several. Since they prefer heat, the most common places they attack are where clothing fits tight against a persons skin (such as sock and waist bands).
The bites itch intensely, much worse than a mosquito bite. They produce a weal; a red, swollen circle around a tiny opening. The openings can sometimes secrete sebaceous fluid, and itch for several days, maybe even longer than a weak.
They are truly the worst /out/ nuisance. You’ll have a nice day hike and won’t even realize you’ve been attacked until you’re at home lying in bed.
