River fishing can be tough. Look for areas of slower flowing water; behind rocks, around bends, embedded sunken trees. Those will be the best areas to look for fish. Use a float and toss near the rocks, letting it float downstream to the rocks like a piece of food normally would, you'll probably get hits. If you can get on a boat, it'd be better for trolling the river.

So i did some more playing with my ne wrely built fly rod, 310 grains is just about bang on what it wants to throw for a shooting head with overhead casting, so im going to do some looking and see what i can come up with for something in the way of a 30 or 35 foot head/tip combo that comes in right around 300 grains

You know a clothes pin with a piece of fishing line in it would require very little force to release, to the point of probably needing to put rubber along the jaws tp give it more grip just to pick up the bait, right?
Magnets would put an unnecessary extra piece on the line to connect to, where clothes pins would just lightly squeeze the line.

Well, heavy braid requires heavy lures. You're using a 10ft rod, what's the weight limit on it? 10lbs? 20lbs? Should match your line to your rod.

Also, are you loading your rod properly? You need enough weight to bend the rod tip down a bit, to get that extra parabolic whip. Having a 3/4 oz weight doesn't mean much if your tip isn't bending. Plus, braid can bite into itself unlike mono or flouro. So if you have a hard fight, the next time you cast, it'll have difficulties casting past where the line tightened and bit into itself. Not really that bad, just gotta reel out and pull it loose.

Its a pretty old and stiff rod, and I don't know the weight on it. As for loading it I don't know what you mean. You do bring up a great point though, maybe I should buy a new rod? A 3/4 spoon is about the heaviest lure I'll be using. I'm gonna be fishing out of Copper Harbor in Lake Superior this fall for salmon.

Your lure may or may not lay flat on the lake bed with a regular jighead. Ned rigs are supposed to keep the plastics upright because of their shape and weight distribution.

Ball jigheads lay flat on the bottom. Ned head jigheads stand straight up especially with really buoyant baits made by ZMan. It looks like a feeding baitfish/worm/leech feeding on the bottom.

Sometimes less is more. Bass don't have perfect vision so profile is what's important, and if they see a profile of something that's constantly moving they'll be wary of it since it's obvious bait. A stick might look like a a baitfish being still nibbling at the bottom or it might look like a crawfish trying to be still to not be noticed. You can catch bass on anything, but the bigger smarter bass are more wary of something with too much movement.

I used a strikeforce for a long time and I never had any problems with it, good choice. The QR750 is a bit of an upgrade but worth it for like $25 imo. If you wanna be tying leaders all the time, that's on you. I use braid on everything but my ultralight because of that

Have a medium light somewhere between 6'5 and 7'6 with a reel (daiwa if you're a daiwaboo like me) with 10lb braid with a fluorocarbon leader or 6-8lb monofilament. If you're fishing rivers like mine then jigheads and 2-4 inch soft plastics with the occasional jerkbait or topwater is really all you need at it's most basic. Like skid said, look for riffles and the Eddies after them. Know what species are in your local watershed and find the best way to target them where you think that they'll be. No two rivers are the same.

I ended up catching my PB saugeye on a keitech easy shiner today, how are you guys doing?

imo 10wts are the best in the wind but you dont need one. A faster 8wt will work well. Use a heavy shooting style line like Rio outbound short or Airflo sniper and double haul really well, you should have no problem making 60ft casts.

Come on anon, there's no reason to be spiteful towards him like that.
I'd advise against braided line because with pier fishing you will get tangled up with other fishermen a lot. Usually it's not even your fault. I'd recommend a hi-vis fluoro line, if you're running braid and get tangled, your braid will slice right through the other guy's line. The morons usually deserve it, but it'll get you a bad reputation if you intend on fishing the same pier(s) frequently

Hey lads, new fisherman with a couple questions. Been out 4-5 times, haven't caught anything yet but had some nibbles. Going to a river near my house which leads into one of the great lakes. Wondering if you can identify any mistakes I'm making.
I've got a size 1 octopus hook. I take about a half inch to an inch of Canadian nightcrawler worm, and thread it onto the hook like its a sock. I have a small sinker about 4-5 inches above the hook, and I placed a bobber 2-2.5 feet above the hook. I don't tend to pull back any seaweed when I'm reeling in. I fish around 8-9PM.
Haven't got any solid bites, but have seen a few nibbles. It seems like the fish aren't really taking the bait, just trying to strip it.
My main thoughts are that my hook may be too big, or I'm not recognizing when to set the hook. Any advice? I love being out there so patience isn't an issue, but if I'm doing something wrong I'd love to know.

Is your bait getting stolen? If you’re getting bites but no hooks it’s because you can’t feel that shit with the bobber. Try the drop shot, rig the weight at the end of the line, use a Palomar to tie your hook somewhere between 6 and 24 inches odd that, rig the worm on the hook. Toss it out. Let it sink. Get the line tight till you can feel the weight on the bottom, there’s a sweet spot you’ll feel it. When you get a strike on the bait then set the hook.

If you’re not getting hits it’s a bait/lure issue. Either way unless you’re using like a popping cork on a spare rod to dangle something meant for a large fish that you can safely ignore until it gets swallowed leave that bobber shit alone senpai.

Check out Tim or Steve Rajeff on youtube. They are world champion distance casters and have a few videos on explaining double haul and other ways to increase your distance. If you do go with shooting style lines once you get the head (first 30ft or so) in the air do a solid forwards haul and you should be able to dump 70ft+ no problem. If you are wading on beaches I would recommend a stripping basket especially if you are using intermediate/sinking lines. It will help with line management and give you an extra couple feet on your cast.

This is a good blog on the drop shot, the one thing I take issue with, and I fish saltwater for the most part, is the weights he uses. I've used barrels and eggs for weights on it, but I've gotta say pyramids are where its at. You want to set your line with as much ability to get tension as possible, and while on rare occasions pyramids may catch they aren't that risky for it. The more tension you can set on a DS the more you'll know if its a strike you feel or the weight sliding around on you. That and you want a sensitive rod so you can feel even the little fuckers hit.

You possibly might wanna do some reason for what bait to use in the water you fish, sounds like you're using bait they will bite problem is you might wanna switch to a circle hook if you're not gonna stand or sit there and hold your pole.
A J Hook you need to set the hook a circle hook is supposed to snag the fish in the side of the mouth when the fish swims off with the bait.
I'd recommend you do this...
Find some fishing line that matches the color of the water you fish in and use that has a leader.
Get roughly 1-2 feet of that line and tie it using a swivel if you're gonna use a sinker then put the sinker on the main line first before your tie the main line to the swivel.

Here's an example:
Say the line on your reel is braid right?
You'd put your sinker on the braid line then using a Palomar knot tie to the swivel and then tie your leader to the other end of the swivel then tie your hook to the leader.
That's pretty much how I fish rivers.
Sinker on the Braid, Tie Swivel to Braid using a Palomar knot then tie leader to swivel then tie hook to leader.

flyfishing babby here, confused about leaders.
I'm trying to cast some weighted streamers but the line/leader wont turn over nicely in the air and kind of hinges . When i do cast it shoots out and then the fly just stops mid air and takes a sharp turn.
i thought that meant my tippet was too hefty and tied on the smallest dry fly i have to confirm, but i can cast that 30+ feet without any problems.

2 feet down isn't that deep. Your probably getting small fish like sunfish and smaller bass. If you want to hook them, you need a smaller hook and smaller bait. A size 12-14 will do you. You're probably getting your bait stripped by a bunch of small fish, to get past them, you need bigger, stronger bait. Possibly even just letting the bait go down to the bottom.

Is there any point to fly fish on a lake? I think it looks really cool but I fish in a giant lake on a boat. I was thinking of just having one pole with a drop shot soaking bait for trout while I fly fish near some shallow vegetation on the shore.

I've caught bass and sunfish fly fishing on lakes. Ideally you want as little wind as possible, just like fishing any other topwater. On large lakes trout prefer the deeper water so you will probably need a sinker like you said.

Use a shorter leader. 3 feet 20lb with 2 feet 15lb. If a trout is going for a streamer they dont care about what sized line is attached. Your casting could probably use some work, 60ft+ should be easy with dries or streamers. Learn to Double haul, it will help turn over heavier flies and let you cast further.

i think its actually that your leader is not hefty enough, it sounds like that hefty streamer is dominating the cast. use something in the way of a 6-8 foot 0x leader (.015) or, if you can tie your own, do 3 feet of #25, 2 feet of #20, and 3 feet of #15 it should turn over bulkier heavier flies much better. also make sure that the fly is getting all the way back before you forward cast, if you start your forward cast early it causes a lot more problems with a big fly than a small one. also, look in to something called the Belgian cast.

It's mostly used for saltwater, but have you tried learning to double haul? It makes casting out chunky streamers a lot easier. Also takes a lot of strain off of your casting arm.

Don't even need rocks, you can do beer bottles. Look for ones with thick bottoms. You can fill them with water and hit the top hard with something, bottom shoot pop off. I've tried knapping some that way, it's pretty fun and beer bottles are more readily available (depending where you live) than flint or obsidian.

I went out again today after brushing up on my double haul in the yard. Made a huge difference in being able to get the line out there. I still need a lot of practice but winds were still blowing pretty good on the exposed side (20 mph gusts) but I was able to cast about 60 ft without much trouble.

Do you think the contour making is worth the extra 50-100 bucks? It still doesn't load charts. Nice, double haul is essential and you will start using it every cast after getting used to it. The other thing that can help is doing a Belgian cast. I dont use it often where I fish but it is definitely worth learning.

The rod in that image is a Shimano Curado 6'10" ML XF rated 1/16-5/16oz. It has 10lb Sufix Performance Braid with a 5' leader of 6lb fluoro.
If I started using spybaits I would use a different rod since the lure rating on that rod is so low.

Yeah it's USDM with the deep spool.
Shallow spools save some weight and in theory dampen vibrations less. I'm not very worried about either, and the Tatula 2000 is already too light as it is for that 6'10" ML Curado rod. It balances on the blank on front of the handle.
I would probably be better off with a 2500 over the 2000 desu senpai.

Yellowtail is probably my favorite species to eat behind maybe white sea bass. Poke, sashimi, the collars, and I found a killer recipe for hamachi teriyaki and miso glazed yellowtail. I even eat it with just a little salt and pepper on it and a squeeze of lemon.

They're in the same family, but no one in their range calls them an amberjack, they're yellowtail here, kingfish in Australia and they have like 3 names in japan. It's a temperate or cold water fish that doesn't get a ton of parasites like ajs do.

What do I know? I'm only the one that caught them and spent the evening cleaning and packing them in the freezer, no worms by the way. I can tell the difference between a Yellowtail Amberjack and a Golden Amberjack, if that's what you mean. They're both, well, amberjack... I understand the difference. You're arguing semantics. Ive filleted both and eaten them too. They aren't great, they're fished commercially in the Pacific so people see them on the menu at restaurants and presume the expensive fish on the menu is the best eating. The east coast comparison might be grouper or something, they're about the most pricey you'll find at a commercial eatery but in the grand scheme of things they aren't amazing.

You don't need to backpeddle, it's ok to admit that you are wrong. It's not semantics, while they are both seriola they are different fish. One is a warm water fish, one is cold water, one is a resident reef fish, one migrates and goes offshore. If you've eaten yellowtail and think "they aren't great" then you should probably learn how to cook better. I've had aj before and it isn't as good, but generally speaking cold water fish taste better so it's not a big surprise.

I've had 3 of them and they don't last me. The whole concept of of the a slow-moving trebel hooked lure to be used with light tackle is about the snaggiest thing you could ask for. The first one I had lasted about 30 casts, caught an overzealous bluegill and foul-hooked a baby white bass then wrapped itself around a dock's crossbeam. The second lasted about 15 casts before being broken off at a different dock while landing a 10+ pound drum. The third I've only used once at a super pressured pond and dint catch anything with, but I at least still have it.

I always let my spinners dry before closing the box. The sun is really intense here, so I usually just put them in the box and leave it open on the shore next to me and it'll usually be dry in 5 minutes or less

Their reels are shitty and fall apart. Their braid is shitty and breaks randomly or unbraids itself from what I've heard. I don't know anything about their rods maybe they're excusable. Pretty much any rod that is straight and has a real brand for guides (they are also straight and put on correctly) is more then usable. Rod sensitivity is pretty much only needed for ground contact lures. If you're throwing spinnerbaits, frogs, and crankbaits then sensitivity doesn't matter.

Yes, and it absolutely does make a difference. I had an OG lexa 400 with just the regular baitcaster handle and it was a pain in the ass reeling up fish from bottom fishing. Replaced it with a cheap off-brand power handle from Amazon and it made reeling so much better. It also depends what you're using the reel for, usually it's meant for bigger game where you're not casting every minute

Just bought my first fishing reel, a Daiwa 18 Ninja LT 1000, and I'm having an issue: if I open the bail, I can't turn the handle for more than barely one revolution before it comes to a dead stop. Normally this would be where the bail automatically flips down. If I manually flip the bail down it becomes possible to turn the handle as usual again.

Is this a defect or is there some setting that I haven't figured out? I know you're not supposed to close the bail by turning the lever but still.

Its actually bad for the reel to use the handle to close the bail, it causes undue wear and tear. I dont have first hand experience with that reel but they might have designed it to not let you close the bail by cranking the handle.

Nevermind, watched some videos and realized. Seems it's a feature to stop the bail from closing unintentionally. I tried using a lot of force when turning the lever and the bail actually does close when you do that. Oh well.

Carp can be a pain to clean because of all the bones, taste like shit when caught in nasty water, and people tend to not bother with them when better fish are available, but they can taste pretty good when done correctly. A big part of their reputation as trash fish is because people try and prepare them the same way they other fish, which doesn't work as well for carp meat. Some carp cleaning/prep tips:

Carp are the most popular food fish in the world for a reason, they're not the trash fish a lot of people think they are. I can smoke anything with fins, feathers, or legs and make it taste bredy gud. Carp included, though I concur with anon that preparation is difficult. I would start by saying what fish you want to start on and ask him what some good locations would be for said fish, then give him your budget and ask him to put together a kit for you. If the ship is quiet he should be happy to help as he has done hundreds of times before

I used to have a spinning reel that had auto closing bail arm when you turn the handle and within a month it broke because the mechanism eroded, I would cast the lure and the bail arm would shut by itself. The line would snap mod cast and that would be a $20 lure gone.

Manually closing the bail arm is the only way to go

I think the reason theyre the most popular food fish in the world has more to do with the fact that they can live and thrive in almost any stagnant mud hole and can withstand great temprature extremes, and grow rather large more than table fare. I do want to try to eat a carp out of some good water some time, but i doubt its going to be my new favorite fish
