Older fly fishing reels just look so much better and still compete with modern reels performance wise. Its not even a fair compare them honestly. Does this happen with spinning/bait casting/round, or is the performance decrease too significant?

Fly reels are only good going back because there's only a few moving parts and they only need a simple drag for most applications. The only reason an old fly reel is good is because 80% of the time its just holding extra line.

Standards. They make tin heads that weight about 1/64 if you wanna go lighter but that's fly rod territory. I use .9 gram tungsten heads usually.
That actually reminds me, what do I need to start tying marabou jigs? I don't have any intention of tying flies so I really only need the bare minimum to make basic jigs.

buy a cheap tying vise, a $20 one will be fine
a bobbin
some danvilles flat waxed nylon thread 110 den. to match your marabou, marabou, and i think ice dub is a worthwhile additive to give your jigs a little flash. you'll want nice scissors, too, and if you want you can get a whip finish tool but hand whip finishing is absolutely an option. ill post another reply with some links.

Thanks for the replies guys. Switched to a dropshot and lost the bobber. Immediately started getting hits and reeled in 5 fish tonight. Couple rockbass, a Goby and a small sunfish, not sure what type.

I only use 2-piece rods because 90% of my fishing involves me getting to the spot via bicycle. I live in a downtown city area too so long 1 piece rods can get unwieldy to carry around even when walking.
If you drive to all your fishing spots and have enough space in your car, you'll be fine with a 1 piece.

you dont have to tell me about the behemoth, its more reel than I'll ever need performance wise. I will be buying a tibor when I can "afford" one. I only know one person who has expensive/rare reels and he says "It's like watch or coin collecting except I know my kid wont pawn them when I die"

How's the St Croix fly rods? I own St Croix baitcasting rods but never bothered with their fly rods because I was skeptical.
They seem to be much cheaper too unlike most of the fly rod manufacturers out there so that may have added to my skepticism.

I have only tried the 8wt mojo bass fly rod but it casts very well at less than 60ft and you lose accuracy further than that. The rod is only 7'11 and I got it for 160CAD, so I wasn't expecting to drop a fly on a dinner plate at 90ft, the components are slightly better than I expected. I'd imagine their other rods perform very well and have much better components. TFO also makes good inexpensive rods if you're looking for options. I was interested in the new st croix imperial salt but I cant find reviews or a place to test cast it in my area.

Any Pacific Northwest (US) fishermen here that have had any saltwater success lately? Indians closed down Neah Bay and Canada is closed so no fishing Vancouver or swiftsure. Puget Sound fishing is complete ass and not comparable.

Picked a king with herring/flasher couple months ago, a small king off a meatline with herring iirc, and a coho off kelp cutter/hoochie probably a month ago.

Been out many times, tried plugs, spoons, herring, herring strips, hoochies, dodgers, flashers, kelp cutters. Typically using a smelly jelly scent and brined herring/anchovies. Despite traditionally getting an early morning bite, the only two fish were caught in the evening. Ordered a 'brad's super bait cut plug' which I'll hopefully get to try at some point, no idea how it will work, willing to try anything if it'll bring in a salmon. Got some big doggies, biggest I've ever seen, clearly eating well.

At least trout fishing is still good.

Conventional reels have come a long way in freespool, size and drag. Even just in the last 20 years. I can cast a surface iron much more easily on my saltist 20 than my 90's era progear. I've caught schoolie tuna on a jigmaster on 25# and the sideplate of the reel was too hot to touch and I've caught similar sized tuna on a 400 size baitcaster with no issue. I would imagine that for freshwater it isn't as big of a deal aside from the freespool and castability.

Are there any rigs I can fish with roe on a memecaster in case my spoons aren't working? I feel like I won't be able to cast it due to how light the rig will be, but my casting rod is my only rod strong enough to catch a king salmon on. I've already seen some in my local creek.

I have an ugly Stik 2m medium action two piece and spinning reel spooled with 8lb green trilene and sometimes 4lb clear mono leader. I it use to throw dark green senkos and various color swimbaits using Texas rig on 3/0 EWG or 1/0 offset shank hooks or wacky rig using #1 gamakatsu tarpon hooks. Out of desperation I also tried some new crank and jerkbaits. I try catch whatever is biting, largemouth, perch, crappie, bluegill but if I see a catfish that's ok too. I do this in the afternoon and evening from shore or kayak on lakes and rivers in the southeast, in all kinds of conditions.
I also use a 7wt fly rod to throw bigger swimbaits trying to entice the bass, but they never hit. I use a 4 wt fly rod with a variety of nymphs and streamers to target trout in mountain streams.
The area is around the blue ridge (VA, WV, NC)

You guys probably won't believe me, but yesterday I saw a pajeet fishing for spawning salmon in a deep pool of a creek using a bobber, and two feet down from the bobber was a fucking casting spoon. Yes a casting spoon. He was just letting it sit there as if he was worm fishing and he was telling me the salmon weren't hungry today. Also, he was using a spinning reel but holding the rod upside down so his reel was on top of the rod instead of hanging below. It was funny watching him struggle at casting. I wish I recorded a video.

The GoPro is still the gold standard, although there have been some newer ones on the market worth looking at, like the new one from Insta360.
I recently bought a GoPro Hero 8 - cost me a pretty penny in Canada with some accessories and extra batteries. Got a really fast 128GB microSD card but now I think I may need 256GB for 4K video.
My only gripe with it is that the battery life is less than stellar so I have to pack extra batteries and a powerbank.

Cringe. Light colours never catch anything. My top two performing spinners both have black bodies, with shiny stuff in the hair, and a patterned blade that might be resembling fish scales. Rooster tails are the best spinners. Silver blade when there's lots of sun, gold if there isn't. 1/8th or 1/6th ounce are ideal for bass and trout. They will catch various sizes ranging from small trout that can fit on the palm of your hand to good eaters. The first time I took the silver blade into a creek I caught 11 bass in two hours. The wire is bent/dented from catching too many fish on both of these.

Spinner color and size should be selected based on water temp, water clarity, and ambient light. Fish in bright sun, clear water, warmer water will get spooked by big bright lures. If the water is colder, murky, and the sky is overcast you can use bigger brighter lures to get their attention. For example, the river I fish is low, clear, temp 64 degrees and it’s sunny. I’ll start with a #2 black/gold panther martin and try small rooster tails in subdued colors. When the river is high, muddy, temp 55 degrees and the sky is overcast, I throw the biggest and brightest spinners I’ve got. UV colors, nickel or silver plated blades, that kinda stuff.

As of right now I think the best model is obviously the Hero 8. The big thing for me is the stabilization, Hypersmooth 2.0 is a huge upgrade over the previous one. I use my GoPro for other activities (such as biking) besides fishing so the stabilization is a big deal for me.
Plus being able to livestream in 1080p was a bonus. If stabilization doesn't matter for you then the Hero 7 Black should be fine, you can often find it on sale nowadays.

If you don't mind waiting a couple months, then the next GoPro should be just around the corner.

And like I said, go check out what Insta360 has. I quite like their 360 cameras but haven't had experience with their new action cams. If they're anything like their 360 cameras then they may have an edge over the current GoPro. Learn to do your own research.

Anyways if you're dead set on using nightcrawlers then the square foam box they come in will be fine. Just keep them out of the sun and cooled if possible. Make sure the soil is moist (should be adequate enough if you buy them fresh), but not too moist otherwise you'll start to have rotting worms that smell like death. You may want to secure the lid to the box because some of them come off easily. Some string or a couple of elastic bands should do the trick.

I'm definitely going to try casting for staging salmon at the mouth of the Humber and Credit this Fall. Still undecided if I should get an 8-10ft salmon/steelhead rod or just use my 7ft MH-F bass rod.
Not much of a river fisherman myself as I don't do float fishing and I'd have to get an 8wt fly setup plus waders for river salmon. Its always a shit show on the rivers every year too.

Your 7' rod should suffice. You can also just use roe, or even spoons or spinners to catch fall salmon. There's plenty of spots on Bronte Creek where you don't even need waders, you can fish from the shore. But if you bring a pair of waterproof rubber boots you can access some deep pools where a lot of people won't be just by "wading" through ankle deep water. However I'm not going to tell you exactly where to park as I don't want a bunch of internet retards showing up. Just a heads up if you've never been salmon fishing before: it's the unwritten rule to retrieve your line and leave it out of the water when someone else yells "fish on!" so the salmon doesn't go for a run and get caught on someone else's line. Wait for them to land it or moan "fish off."

pretty cool looking cleo. too bad looks dont always catch fish. practically the only colors trout/salmon bite near me is blue, purple, teal, and green while fishing in clear water conditions. occasionally ive caught them on orange or yellow but those were all on glow in the darks.

What are some tips to get on some rockbass??? I've only caught them a few times in my life and they tasted amazing. Whenever I go for rock bass I use a Baby Craw or something similar, they love the crayfish that are usually too small for bass to care about. Alternatively, a small spoon or nightcrawler also work well, but I've had better luck with the craws since bluegill seem less interested in them than they are spoons and worms.

Something along those lines, yeah. The size of the jig depends entirely on how fast the river I'm fishing is, 1/8 usually works for me. Despite their size rock bass have big mouths for panfish, so you should use lures too big for the average bluegill but not full-sized bass craws.

Now just try fishing in one of the "great" (fallen) lakes and see where that gets you. You'd end up switching nd up switching baits 20 hours later all the way home with precisely 0 fish caught onshore. Unless of course its a run in which case salmon (and some trout) will bite just about anything out of aggression during spawning season. If an entire body of 30-50 or so people are catching one fish maybe every 5 hours you know at that point that it has nothing to do with skill and is nothing but dumb luck.

I’m not skid, but look for seams where they can sit in slow water and dart into the current to feed. Current brings food, and they want to hold where they can exert minimal energy and wait for the current to deliver food. Look for back eddies, structure, and seams between fast and slow water.

99 percent of my fishing is on rivers for trout. A lot of days you’ll go out and not see anything hatching so you need some sort of plan to figure out what they are eating. For streamers I usually will start with a big white streamer then a smaller one. After that I try dark patterns.
I’m not sure what lakes your fishing but if I’m throwing something in a place I know fish should be and nothing is taking I switch why waste time.

Its literally the only few places they'd even be. The deepest rocky pools are always the best when fish arent spawning in the great lakes. Spots of which will get about 25 or maybe 30 feet deep at the farthest you can cast. There used to be a good alwife and smelt population in the great lakes which fed salmon and trout. But since the mid 1990s, the fishing there just hasnt been the same and has only gotten progressively worse since then.

Without glow in the darks? A very slow retrieve and lures that are above the fishes heads. Awake bass often hit the lure a lot quicker too as there is very little pressure on lakes and these fish know it.

Marine area 11, usually somewhere between the clay bank by point defiance, south of vashon, or by the puyallup river.

I rigged up a buzzbomb but I happily found out my mooching pole has a broken tip so none of that until I either fix it or buy a new one. Real shame since I had planned to try the buzzbomb this year and some point wilson darts in the hopes it might not foul me up on as much kelp.

The indians closing Neah bay blows. Could have at least salvaged something from there. Long drive to westport to try the ocean out there.

More people will start seeling in the winter. It's mostly 9 and 12wts but the odd 5,8,10,11wt will show up. I've been trying to get a reel for a hot minute now but boomers dont understand how bidding works so used reels are still going for 85% msrp.

I have the best luck letting it sink on semi-slack line. When I hits the bottom I reel down to get rid of all slack without moving it. Then I SLOWLY raise my rod tip until the tip is perpendicular with the ground, then I reel up the slack line as I lower my rod, and start over again.
If I know where a fish is likely to be I pitch it to that spot, let it fall on semi-slack line, and just dead stick it on semi-slack line. You will either feel an aggressive bite or if the fish is gentle then you might see your line start to move. After dead sticking it for a while (as little as 15sec and as long as a minute) give it a hop and reel of the slack and start your mental timer over.

Stay away from new boats, and stay away from old motors. If it's just you, I'd look into getting a fishing Kayak with fish storage and pole holders, canoes are a pain in the ass and suck on choppy water. For you and a few buddies, I'd say a 12-14 foot aluminum with nothing bigger that a 50hp engine. Pic related is my pontoon with a 50HP and she cruises fast.
