Tried to go to some of our favorite spots but the roads to get there were closed due to the wild fires, ended up fishing a pretty bad spot and no one caught anything, but i got to drink some beers with my friends and we saw a dead shark, pic related is shark

Anyone in MA/new england have freshwater tips when its at its hottest? I've been skunked two times in a row and I know my tactics probably suck. Mostly going for bass, but I like catching chain pickerel and to a lesser extent sunfish.

In past years when I had access to a boat I pretty much wacky wormed it and called it a fucking day. Cast into cover, rocks, pads, downed trees and always worked well for me all year all times. Now I'm fishing 99% of the time on the shore and it's pretty rough. Nothing plastic is working - texas rigged senkos, wacky senkos, weighted curly tail grubs. I have a couple rapala crankbaits and assorted minnows, but nothing really doing. I don't feel like the spots I'm at are overfished either.

I've caught more fish off the surf this year just soaking mackerel than I have freshwater, that's how bad it is.

Fishing like a tournament angler for fun is the single most stupid thing. It's so boring just winching fish in with a fish on a 100+ sized baitcaster.
Don't get me wrong, my Scorpion MGL and Tatula SV are impressive pieces of engineering, but nothing beats hearing a size 1000 or 2500 spinning reel's drag scream as you fight fish 3+ pounds.

Where do you surf fish? In CT, trying to find some good salt spots. As for NE summers, I've had good luck with top lures during mornings and evenings.....mid-day is brutal but it seems like the weather is finally cooling down.

Imagine honing in on this as if you need a floating leader to keep from sinking a whopper plopper. Or even a fly for that matter. He could have used a heavier leader, or a longer one to let it stretch more, or reduced drag, and your smooth brain thinks the problem is that the leader didn't float.

A strongly buoyant lure is a great time to use fluorocarbon so you can take advantage of its tendency to ride below the waterline and not shine

Any kayak fishermen around? I believe it's generally recommend to go with sit-on-top kayaks for fishing, but does anyone have any recommendations or other tips for looking at them? Bass Pro Shops seems to only have "Ascends", the other outdoor store near me says their kayaks are all sold out online. Should I look at the used market or maybe wait until a sail hits now that summer is ending?

Hobie, Old Town, and Pelican all make decent fishing kayaks.
I have my eye on a Pelican Catch PWR100 because it fits my budget but I can't seem to find one anywhere in Canada yet.

I like using braid line. The knot slips if I tie it to a lure/hook so I use a leader. I chose floro because people said it as harder for fish to see. I don't really know the difference between mono. I also don't know why you think that I think I know a lot.

I don't see why I would use mono. The bass as pulling my drag out anyway. It definitely wasn't 8 lbs of drag which is the floror I was using.

Fluoro is not more abrasion resistant, its more expensive, has a lot of memory, and has weaker knot strength. If you're fishing for large predatory fish they wont be leader shy. From my experience, pike, largemouth, smallmouth, musky, brook trout, walleye and laketrout are not leader shy in the slightest.

The only fish I can think of that benefits from fluoro is tarpon and maybe some other really hard mouthed salt water fish. But that's only for leaders with braid as a main line.

Haven't ever caught Catfish but I have no issues catching bass just about anywhere. Crescent Lake & Batterson pond are my usual go-tos but you need to get there early or late and be willing to walk a fair amount to find a good spot. Silver Lake has some catfish, my buddies caught some there. The real challenge for me has been trout but I think I just need to figure out the right technique.

Been there, walked around the lake, I noticed lots of hikers when I went but not too many people fishing. Few kayakers as well.. Didn't seem bad but Southington is a bit of a drive to get to from the shoreline (unfortunately most decent places are). I'll have to check out Batterson Pond.

if you are using an intermediate/sinking line check out the swimmin' jimmy or flatliner if you dont have them already. Pretty much the only streamers I use for trout and bass along with the dungeon.

The worst hunt is as good as the best fishing. I would rather shoot squirrels than yank up trout.

My favorite forms of fishing are all doable in the summer- drop off fishing/long line, flat fishing, crappie jigging, jugline cats, and snakeheading.

Off fishing tomorrow. Spur of the moment thing. Went last thursday and had a great day,9 brown trout and a grayling. Same spot tomorrow, it's a good quiet spot me and my friend found a few years ago.
Need to tie a few rigs and sort my shit out, but got a dedicated backpack with all my river bits in.

Yes. It's pretty much just mono with a fluoro coating. It will stretch a little more, so it's more forgiving and won't snap as easily as fluoro. It is more buoyant than fluoro as well so it is nice for Carolina rigs where you want your lure to flutter and float off the bottom.
The only time I use fluoro is when I need light line finesse like ned rigs, then I use a 6lb fluoro leader.
Whether it's fluoro or co-poly, I tie them as leaders on a braid mainline.
I see no reason to not use braid mainline.

Its not bad per se but its not as fun in my opinion, more hassle than its worth, spin reel allows you to cast lighter lures, baitcast allows heavier lures.

I would kook at ugly stik combos or get a 100dollar range rod and a starting shimano/daiwa reel to start out and upgrade from there

I'd say think about just getting the 8, itll still have plenty of back bone to turn an angry carp or red drum around, and punch through most wind. Personally I use baitcasters and conventional for bait and lures that have their own action like swimbaits and stuff and I use spinners for really light lures and lures where the action is imparted by the rod like jigs and jdm stickbaits. Oh and I use spinners in the surf cuz sand and saltwater do not get along with levelwind mechanisms.

Are people hard on their line as well?
The only fluoro I have is some 6lb Invizx and I've never had a break, yet I see reviews on every imaginable fluoro saying something like "broke 5 times in one day! NOT MY KNOTS' FAULT THIS LINE IS GARBAGE."
I usually reel down on fish and lean into them rather than violently setting the hook, and I frequently run my fingers over the line to make sure it isn't getting roughed up. If I have this mentality then any line is will be fine right?

People don't know how to set their drags. I always set mine by lifting a bag of lead equal to 33% the line weight. Too many of the aforementioned boomers just set it based on feel or with their rod in line with a scale which doesn't take into account drag on the guides especially when the rod is under load.

goin fishin on my own for the first time. I had some help getting set up with lures (cranks, spinners and some plastic) and a spinner reel, but the local ass pro was completely out of medium rods, so now I need to get one. Intent is to fish deep creek lake, would be kinda neat to catch a walleye and eat it, and dont want something bigger than expected to break my hardware, that'd suck.

I'm told I need a rod 6' to 7' with medium (should I do med-heavy?) power and I suppose a fast action. That sound right?

pastebin is telling me to get 8lb line. When would 10lb be necessary?

And is there a significant strength difference between one piece or 2 to 3 piece rods? It'd be nice to be able to cleanly fit a rod in my car.

And for when you're catching to keep, how do you guys pack out your fish? cooler and ice?

There's a fucking amazing little drainage pond next to my workplace (random suburban office park) with bass and bluegills and stuff. It's private property with no trespassing signs though. Property map says it's owned by some random giant real estate company from another state. How much trouble do you think I'd be in if I got caught fishing in it (I have no idea if anybody even enforces it)? This is in Virginia.

A ML or even a L would probably be fine, you won't be able to overpower the fish quite as easily. If it's a lake with walleye, you're more likely to catch other things than the walleye, and even then you might catch smaller ones. You definitely do not need a MH unless you're targetting muskie.

I'd recommend Uglystiks for you, they are affordable and also durable as hell. I'm not sure about your area, but around here black, green, and chartruse work well on walleye/saugeye.

Why don't fish bite topwater bait once rivers get over 60 feet wide? I can throw topwater lures in the elbows of rivers and catch every fish imaginable, even in less than a foot of rapid water, all the way down to 5 feet. But as soon as that river gets wide and slows down I don't even get a bite. I've thrown on jerkbait and crankbait, spinnerbaits, even rooster tail, but once this river gets fat and slow it's like the fish aren't there.

I can catch smallmouth, white bass, perch, even largemouth in the elbows with topwater but not a damn thing in the large part of the river. Am I retarded?

My friends and I stopped at a small outlet from the large lake during our hike out towards our fourth campsite, saw a ton of trout feeding on flies, right near us was a beautiful view where people stopped to rest, had like ~8 people watching my friend and I fly cast thinking we were gods catching trout every cast, but in reality it was easy. Pic related, one of the many brooks I caught, also caught a plethora of golden trout.

I use 10 pound fluorocarbon to tie a 6 foot leader to a 20 pound braid main line and have never broken off a fish up to 20 pounds except when a lazy hook knot unraveled. With circle hooks I don't use a hard set and on a 7 foot medium action spinning rod I have a good ratio of flex to power so hooksets aren't hard on the leader. Learn how to fight a fish and you're fine. Guys that are breaking off on 2 pound largemouth and blaming the leader are obviously just tying bad knots, not using a long enough leader, yanking the hookset like a youtuber, using tight drag, or any combination of the above

All that being said I face a dilemma, I want to get better with artificial baits and using lures to target game fish but I get such a great bite off bait that it feels silly to abandon bait chucking for anything else. I used to use 1.5-3lb grapnel style anchors on sandy and muddy bottoms but I lost like three to them either getting stuck or in one case the metal attachment point failing. What I’m currently using and seems to do the best is an 8lb round one designed for small boats. Typically I tie it on with twice the max depth of rope and depending on how I want to fish I’ll use a second knot on the line to shorten it when I’m out; so when it’s raining and I want to lock down under a bridge I have minimum play. They say not to tie to the sides but I’ve not had any serious issues outside of really heavy surf and I’m not sure how tying off the bow or stern is reasonable given that it’s tricky to reach so far safely. There are systems that allow you to side mount it on a rope system that can be adjusted but that seems like a lot of expense and effort for minimum reward.

Other big thing I can’t recommend enough is a cooler bag to mount up front for beverages and to keep caught fish on ice. Stringers are just a cruel way to kill caught fish as the movement will fuck them up and attract predators. That said I recently invested in a floating rubber net that allows me to keep baitfish or keepers I don’t want to ike jime just yet alive and unstressed.

Yak fishing can be a game of accessories but the big ticket stuff isn’t necessary for success, just slowly invest in stuff that is practical. Something else I’ve found is switching from egg to pyramid weights on my drop shots helps keep them more stable and tight on the bottom in surf, but if you’re fishing Carolinas or jigs or top water stuff you’ll have to find what works best for you.

Alright guys, took my 5 weight fly rod for bass fishing and I was undergunned hard. Hooked into a 4 pounder and it was an absolute mess of a fight. Any recommendations for what fly rod I get next? Targeting 3-6 pound smallmouth and largemouth mainly here in Vegas.

an 8 weight is standard for bass, but if you like throwing bigger streamers a 9 weight will serve nicely. A lot of people use 6 and 7 weights, but thats usually for smallies.

6 weight sucks for lmb if you fish in an area with a lot of cover 8 wt is the way to go plus it’s the most versatile non trout rod weight so you can use it for pike, carp and inshore saltwater.

It's certainly thinner. It has different sink rates for each section with the running line only being 1.5 inches a second, also has a shooting head so it would work fantastic for swinging but I also absolutely love it for short precise casts to piss off fat trout
