Hey guys.

I'll be moving to Europe (specifically Germany) in a few months and was wondering how the camping scene is. Any Eurobros browse this board? From what I've seen it doesn't like as promising as I thought.

Austrian anon living in Bavaria here. The Alps are nice and pretty comfy if you know your way around. There are 2 ways to get a nice /out/-worthy experience: Set up when it gets dark at high altitude and pack up really early in the morning. Don't get caught, don't make fire, don't harass or disturb animals at the Alm/Alp nearby. . Or just ask the staff at a hut or restaurant in the evening if you can set up your tent nearby. Don't act too weird and they won't care usually. Maybe have a drink and something to eat at their place for compensation.

Alternatively there are beds in these huts. Not really my deal. Noisy, expensive, messy, smells and busy.. I definitely prefer going out alone or with my girlfriend or friend.

Some villages even have free wild camping places. You just have to ask the administration of the area for permission. The don't advertise this though for obvious reasons..

For me it's the Austrian Alps near the border with Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Pic related is me last month.

Did a lot over most of Europe, very similar what the rest of the anons have said in here, don't leave Rubbish, don't light a fire and you should be ok. Only ever been moved along in southern Italy (I was on a beach though so was a little exposed). Around the med you should generally be more discrete, cause the cops might not be as nice (nothing compared to America ofc but just but aware of that).

There is no camping scene in Central Europe.
The Jews made wild camping illegal to force Europeans to spend money at pensionen and berghütten or stay with the cattle and campervans in shitty overcrowded serviced campsites (also for money).
If you want to go camping I suggest taking holidays to Scotland or Scandinavia.

Because it's illegal to camp in the wild in germany there's a tight knit community of hardcore stealth campers that go to the sickest spots where noone is around

Just hard to find them and have them accept you.

I did it for two weeks in the black forest last month and nobody cared.
In terms of a scene there really isn't any. Most people just stay in hotels or on campgrounds.
Where in Germany are you moving to?

I'm European, I've travel most of continental Europe, so I'll try to give you some glimps how it's work.

In Central Europe, you don't have wildness per se, all the land belong to someone, if you want /out/ expiriance try to find national park, if u want to explore, or post industrial ground, they usually come with lots of ruins, so be carefully. You can have a fire in most places, but be mindfull of your surrounding, try not to make lots of smoke. If u can cheeky, you can even hunt, but be careful here since fines are quite high. Let me know what you want to do when /out/ and ill try to give you some information about best area in germany or surrounding counties

Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia have great mountains hiking culture. You will find lot of places to camp for free, or for small fee of 5 dolars or something. They are less touristic than Austrian, Bavarian and Swiss, if u will go far enough, you will encounter bears. If you find some good spot, just camp there.

In Germany myself, the camping scene is lit all over the country. I’d recommend getting a Bahnkarte 50 if you’re gonna be using the trains heavy, otherwise I’d use Blablacar or Flixbus to get close to your destination & then take the buses farther towards your destination. Every Bundesstadt has decent nature, but I personally prefer B-W & the Schwarzwald for camping specifically :)

I hike and camp at leaast once a month year round.
It's important not to confuse "camping/wild camping" and "bivouacking"
The former is setting up camp for more than a night, and staying in one spot for several days, and is illegal in most places.
The latter is stopping for the night and packing up next morning, and is legal, or at least tolerated in most places, provided you're not in a protected area or a wildlife reserve.
There's loads of stuff to go around in Europe and you can get all over the place dirt cheap with Easyjet, Ryanair, Vueling, or even car or bus. Strating from Germany you have the Alps, the Ardennes, the Vosges, the Black Forest, all in Germany or bordering. These alone would suffice to fill a lifetime of exploration, or at least a few years worth of hiking the main existing trails

It's not allowed to pitch a tent. Sleeping overnight in a hammock or under a tarp isn't illegal in most parts. In Bavaria and Berlin "tent like" shelters are forbidden, so no tarps and hammocks there and in Hesse it's not allowed to leave the forest paths at night but in the other Bundesländer it isn't a problem if you don't start a fire and leave no rubbish behind.
