>What hammock do you use? Most hammocks are pretty much the same unless you get an asymmetrical Hennessy style one or a bridge hammock, so it really doesn't matter much, you can even find plenty of DIY guides out there and make your own. Personally, I have a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC, which has an integrated bug net and a handy shelf, but there is absolutely no need to buy anything that expensive, especially if you're just starting out with hammocks.
>Is it waterproof?Keeping out rain is what the tarp is for.
>Do you need extra lining for winter? Yes, you'll probably need/want some form of insulation under you for basically anything other than a warm summer's night, hanging in the air with nothing between you and the wind other than a thin layer of fabric gets real cold real quick. A normal sleeping pad works just fine but can be fiddly to keep under you, most folks eventually get an underquilt, which hangs on the outside of your hammock because if it was inside the hammock with you, you'd be compressing the insulation against the hammock. If you get a down one, it packs down pretty small.
>Where do you keep your bag while you sleep? Personally, I have a small plastic sheet I just put on the ground under me and then stick my bag on the sheet. You can also hang your bag on your suspension. Some folks even get a smaller gear hammock they hang under their hammock. I've even encountered a couple of super ultralight guys that basically have nothing in their packs once they're set up for the night that tuck their empty packs under their feet for a little extra insulation.
