I'm gonna dump some pictures from my day hike of the Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, also known as the Presidential Traverse

It is a roughly 20 mile hike and hikers gain about 10,000 ft in elevation, but that can vary depending if you choose to summit certain other peaks.

We started at 5:30am, about an hour later than we had hoped. It took us 16 or so hours to do the whole thing. Minus the 3 or so hours we spent resting, we spent about 13 hours total hiking.

We could not have asked for a better day of hiking weather wise, it was clear and sunny. Probably in the 50's F up in the alpine zone, which is where we spent the majority of the day.

In the White Mountains camping is not allowed, you have to stay at Appalachian Mountain Club huts, which are $120/night and require reservations in advance.

To be honest, I find the huts to be quite the hypocritical establishment. The idea is that by having everyone stay at the huts it lessens the impact on the fragile alpine environment. But they produce a ton of waste, both in garbage and human excrement.

The seven peaks that compromise the traverse are (starting from the North and going South) Mt. Madison, Mt. Adams, Mt, Jefferson, Mt, Washington, Mt. Monroe, Mt. Eisenhower, and Mt. Pierce.

A good portion of our hike was part of the AT, and in fact I met several thru-hikers who were making their way up to the finish in Maine. They were all very friendly and were in good spirits.

I had never been to the White Mountains before and I wasn't sure what to expect. I was imagining a landscape similar to the ADK of New York. While it does share some similarities, the White Mountains are more rocky than I might have thought. The trails are extremely rocky and by then end of the day my ankles and knees were spent.

Hard to imagine, but the time records for the traverse are around the 5 hour mark. The fastest being somewhere around 4 hours and 45 minutes. As you might guess those guys are literally running up and down the peaks, only stopping to eat quickly and so forth. I saw a few people running, but I didn't have time to ask them if they were doing the traverse or not.

We took Valley Way from the Appalachia trail-head near Gorham and finished down the Crawford Path to Crawford Notch.

Mt. Washington was a colossal disappointment, it was very commercialized. There is a goddam road and a cog train that take people to the top, defeating the purpose of a true summit. I had to wait in line to get a picture at the top of the peak, which mad me really angry because people were cutting in front of me, all of whom drove or took the train up. At least I got a bowl of some good chili up there.

dude i know, i had people doing the same thing to me and cutting in line for food too. the road is a cool thing, the cog is actually much cooler, but it's not the same as using your legs. and it sucks up there when the conditions are good. i prefer the gale forced winds and low visibility.

the good thing is mt adams is exactly the same as washington (just a couple hundred ft lower) and so you can experience the same environment without so much as a signpost indicating the summit, just a bronze button

Well that is all she wrote, I did not take that many pictures because I spent most of the time just hiking. And when we did stop it was to eat or rehydrate. It is definitely a hike that I would recommend to anyone.

some of the easy access huts have been ruined by visitors, but Lake of the clouds, Carter Notch, and Galehead are pretty dope. There is a good bit of camping platforms and shelters scattered around the Whites

Mt Washington is a weather death trap, you're lucky to get a sunny day on that peak, but like you found out, the sun brings the tourists. Its really disheartening to hike up the ravine, hitting ice, only to crest and see a parking lot.

I've done a large chunk of the whites at this point, trying to get all the 4,000ft peaks. These mountains are my childhood.

I'm jealous OP, you got some damn good weather.

I love the Whites because it really feels like hiking. Lots of rocky ups and downs. Smaller mountains don't offer the same challenges and views, and larger mountains you tend to stay up on ridges as much as possible.

i'll agree about carter notch and galehead, and i'd like to add madison spring to that list. lakes of the "crowds" is mostly an over-visited side-effect of the mt washington tourist stampede. granted plenty of legit hikers come through, but it's also a clusterfuck up there at times
