In terms of what I put in it, I prefer dark rums. To be clear, not spiced rum, because spiced is usually shit rum. But an actual nice, dark rum. Dunno how much it costs outside Aus, but Beenleigh is a prime example. Does most of the things whisky would, but a lot easier to drink straight, and a lot more approachable for a beginner. It's naturally a little sweeter than even a bourbon, and generally tastes very slightly vanilla-ry.
