Anyone have some nice cookware? I've heard many just stick with an alcohol stove, plastic spoon, and a aluminum mess kit from Wal-Mart.

I enjoy cooking while backpacking too much to stick with just that. I get alot of my stuff for dirt cheap, which is the only way I'll go... I don;t value it that much to spend $50+ on a pot...

Why do you idiots have to ask that in every single stove thread? Sometimes it's illegal, sometimes there's a burn ban, sometimes there's no firewood, sometimes you're stealth camping, sometimes people don't like shitting up the woods with more fire pits, and sometimes it's just easier.

Theres a suite of ecological problems with building a fire in many landscapes - so dont act all high and mighty like its the proper thing to do when you could be fucking shit up. (not saying you are, but certainly in the vegetation I visit it would be extremely frowned upon to be having open fire pit then digging it into the ground.)

The damage that does depends on how high-traffic an area is and how sensitive the soil is. I'm not anti-campfire and I'm not getting into an argument about it, I'm just saying that some people have various good reasons for using stoves and you're just showing your own ignorance by questioning it.

i live in rural florida where my nearest neighbor is miles away, i can understand it if you maybe live in europe where theres no privacy

OP here. Yes, fires are banned in Jersey. I still make them.

However, why make a fire on the trail when I can stop, set up my stove in a minute, boil water in 2 minutes, eat, clean, and hit the trail in a matter of minutes without harming the area, having to wait to put out the fire?

I practice leave no trace, my friends.

Post your cookware or get out, please.

To come back on topic, the cookset you posted is too large for backpacking, but you got the brand correct.

GSI makes top-tier cookware. That being said, I would not bring a gsi soloist kit, I use an msr 1.1liter stowaway pot and stuff my stove, fuel, seasonings, whatever else inside the pot. It's all you need and the pot is bombproof.

Now, if you're going with a friend or special lady, you will want to bring a GSI dualist kit. It holds slightly more volume then the msr pot, and it's got cups and bowls and sporks that stow away inside the pot. You can also fit your fuel canister and pocket rocket/china rocket stove inside of it.

Yes, I'm usually with people. The size of my kit isn't much of a burden, and I don't mind it.

I have a pot in which I can store my stove, fuel and some other items ( Bic, matches, etc) for solo hiking, but I find myself limited with that.

How long do isoprop tanks last?

Going for a week cooking for 4 guys on a pocket rocket. Mostly re-hydrating meals.

I've always just used fire or propane stoves.

This is what homegirl and I use for multi-day hikes. The lid doubles as a colander (it's got holes drilled in it) and the cups have insulated sleeves that allow you to drink your coffee hot and not burn your hands. They also have nonspill lids.

It's really nonsense to get anything else, unless you're soloing, then see my previous post.

You just have to be frugal with it, they will boil water fuckfast and then you can simmer very low with them. Make sure you're guarded from wind and don't let the flame blast up around the pot, that's how fuel is wasted.

Sheesh, hard to say, as I've never taken muc care to make note of it. For a week of cooking all dehydrated food, you'll be boiling alot of water, which takes a good amount of energy. Depends on the climate you're in and how much you insulate your cooking area (windshield). My tanks last a good 4 weekend trips I'd say, but I don't use it every meal.

MSR Pocket Rocket, MSR Ti Kettle.

The kettle is extremely light, about .8 ltrs(?), very durable and fits a 230 grm isopro fuel cell nside.

Plud all that fits inside my new IMUSA grease pot that is repurposed as a 1.4 ltr boiler.

Search youtube for the diy on that. It is excellent!

As per the fire vs stove argument, I like both. If I have the time and the area is suitable, I'll make a fire. If not I have an MSR WhisperLite and an aluminum thrift store pan. The MSR is great, but I don't always bring it as a smaller alcohol/penny stove will get the job done too.

Military gear tends to be heavier but may be more durable and almost always is "just adequate enough to work," and is usually cheaper than branded outdoor gear. Judge for yourself based on that if you can/want to integrate it into your system.

Oh really, you like your Dualist? I like the pot and lid, but the sporks are awful and the cups don't keep beverages hot very long if it is cold out. I've also met a few people on the trail who had trouble keeping their lids on because the didn't fit properly. I really like the sink, though.

When I got my pot set, I also got a GSI serving spoon and a spatula; the spatula melted the first time I used it to flip a pancake. The serving spoon is ok, though. I don't GSI makes good quality accessories.

I've been using the Dualist pot for 4 years now but I've replaced the mugs and sporks. If I could go back in time I'd buy the MSR Quick 2 System and leave the second pot if I didn't need it. The MSR insulated mugs are superior for heat retention, and easier to drink out of.

I'm by no means a cook but would quite enjoy campfire cooking. What do you guys usually bring along to cook with? Not the cookware; foodstuff and ingredients. I can't see there being a fantastic variety of things to make aside from broths, soups, and beans, but I'd like to be proven wrong and given a few ideas.

I just got a new stove in the mail. It's a cheap $5 chinese one goes on any canister. Tested it yesterday to make some coffee. Works a treat. For cook wear I have a small 3 piece set that I onlt bring one or two of depending on the trip menu. I use a multi-tool to move lids and stuff when the normal handles get hot.

you know, I have the exact same stove and tried it last night on a jetboil can as well. I had to crank the burner down very very VERY hard to get the gas to start flowing.

did you have this problem? it's my first canister stove, so wondering if this is par for the course
