I've been having panic attacks every day. I've got 5k and could likely acquire another 5k. I don't have any credit cards, but I don't see why I couldn't apply for one. get a van and drive around and see some cool stuff while living in the van. i was in a similar state a few years back, didn't buy a van but quit my job and lived out of my shitbox sedan for 6 months with the money i had. wasn't comfortable but i saw so much cool shit and got to live like a free (albeit poor) man and had my faith restored in life by the time i got back.

Why do you want to get away from everyone and everything? In the midwest there are tons of good spots 25-50 miles away from high pop. density areas that will probably serve your needs. Becoming a hermit is not a competition to be the absolute farthest away from everyone, there's plenty of room around to get to the isolation level you need.

I have bear spray and carry pepper spray (smoler container) in my backpack. I don't think bears are especially aggressive towards day hikers. I've seen bears in otter creek wilderness but we were in our car.
