Live NJ, which I realize is an /out/let state because virtually all the popular spots I've been to within a 2 hour drive are basically just a mild stroll near a major road. Anyone in this area know some good spots to go get some true outdoors?

about an hour from any part of the trail, but the best parts of AT in this area seem to be 3 or more hours away

bro I don't know what direction you're driving in for 2 hours, catskills are only 2 hours away from North Jersey

If you're in south jersey, even Harriman state park is only 1.5 hours away from Trenton

If you're in south south jersey, then get canoe and go dick around in the pinelands

The water gap is always nice or there's some nice state parks down in the pines. If you have a free weekend north central PA is dope, theres plenty of true /out/ there. Getting a kayak or canoe and exploring the wetlands on the coast is always fascinating too.

The state boundaries dont matter, they're just lines on a map. The circle is about the distance I wanna drive for a weekend hike (the further from the center, the better the place aughtta be)

Catskills are excellent, definitely any more places with gorgeous high overlooks and some novice climbing would be awesome. A lot of the places I've seen are just big hills as opposed to real mountains

Anyone have any recommendations on good trails to follow in Harriman? years ago i used to do overnight camping there but havent been back in some years now. My ideal plan is to do about 4-5 days starting from Tuxedo (or any other train stop cuz no car) and eventually end up back there or another stop on the port jervis line.

I have a trail map and am working on a route that would cover those days but any advice is welcome and appreciated. Aiming to do it over the last week of october.

harriman train station is closer to the AT than tuxedo so if you want to stay at official shelters go over there.

No thats not me but thank you for linking that! I just want to be appropriately isolated so i figured the week of Halloween would be good as the rails may be less populated but who knows these days.

I will take your advice actually and plan around the Harriman Station as I would rather be on the AT. I will look up some good loops around there thank you.
