Is there a nice trail suitable for day hiking accessible from Brooklyn using public transit that's not too busy on weekends? I feel trapped in the city.

I can't help you OP, but I'm in Oneanta right now on vacation from Brooklyn this week and it's really great. I have a car though. I would recommend taking your bike on the NJ Transit, Metro North or LIRR and just ride around for a while. Probably the best option without a car.
