But to answer specifically, have you ever seen of this substance called smoke? Wood fires give it off. And the bigger the fire, the more the smoke. You can get away with a small contained fire fairly easily, depending on your fire skillz. Nice dry hardwood doesn't smoke as much as fresh or wet wood, but you have to make do with what you have around you.
