Whos the retard now? The whole point of spinners is to have more than one presentation in case a fish doesnt like one of them. Kind of like how fisherman often have flies and spoons tied to the same line except in a more condensed way. Same reason why soft body baits sometimes have hairjigs on them right out of the package.

I almost completely agree with you here. But, most fish don't really "dislike" a lure that they think is real, its more about them being keyed in on a certain group of prey. It frankly doesnt make sense to go after dispersed fish and possibly lose sight of the schools of fish/insects/crustaceans etc.

The other day I caught a tiny (maybe 3 inch) rainbow trout out of a Lake Michigan tributary. According to the internet stocking database this river only gets stocked with fingerling rainbows around 6 inches long. Does this mean it was a naturally produced steelhead?

Also, steelhead are any rainbows (that came from a large body of water) up a stream or river for spawning time. The only things that are not steelheads are rainbows that stay in streams all there lives. Kill yourself.

Swivels and its not even close. You could use a splitshot and it would work like a bead. Swivels are more versatile than beads and are used for far more rigs.

Okay so I'm gonna explain my setup.
I always do a clinch knot from the hook using a Monofilament line that matches the color of the water I fish so fish don't see the line.
I then tie the other end of the Monofilament leader to a swivel then I use an egg sinker weight depends on the strength of the current for the water honestly if live bait other than worms don't use a sinker.
If I use a sinker I put the sinker on the main line coming off the reel then polymer knot the main line because I use braid and a clinch knot will slip on braid in due time.

Yes it wouldn't be as easy on the line, but in a pinch you could use them. As a rule of thumb, after a fishing trip, cut off the line before the splitshot. Swivels are needed for far more things and are thus more important

Anyone here use a St. Croix Mojo Bass rod? Was looking at getting one, most reviews seem positive except for the ones who said it snapped at different points.

No there isn't a spring missing, the spring is the thin metal thin you see under the stop mechanism. It's a weird and vintage system (80s from Japan apparently) but I think I fucked up the spring. Probably gonna rake it to the ship for a quick fix

Technically you CAN use them mis matched but I would highly advise against it, the rods are meant to bend one way or the other not both. just use the proper rod for the proper reel style and so on.

I read a couple comments about this. I've only used Ugly Stiks up to this point so I'm not really sure it matters which I get since I imagine both will feel completely different to me when I actually get one and use it.

Every fish attractant I have used so far is good and catches more fish. The powerbait one sucks though. I'd reccomend staying away from offbrand stuff and powerbait. Really though, you should just make your own fish attractant. I use fish oil, salt, garlic powder and heat it up a little to help mix it well and to make it thicker and more pungent. The exact measurements are about 2 cups of oil, 2 table spoons of salt and garlic each. Afterwords, you cook it over low heat for a couple minutes.

My boss is deeply into fishing and he talks about it a lot. Gets into it down to a science, from the direction of the current to the water PH and temperature, and phases of the moon. We have a good bit of lakes and “fishin holes” around here to choose from. He always eats what he catches, from what he tells me

That being said, I’ve literally never been fishing or on a lake but I’m curious about it since it seems like a good wholesome hobby and I could learn from a bonafide master. BUT: am I a pussy or being overly paranoid about parasites or worms that I could contract from eating whatever fishes I catch? Supposedly he knows where to catch walleye and crappie/croppie which he says are decent tasting.

Doing decent hikes into da woods to get to places to trout fish is my favorite thing in the world. And the only thing better than that is if you can make it a two night weekend trek, going fairly easy to enjoy the view/covering maybe 20ish miles round trip, and not being in a race with the ultralight faggots who seem to miss the whole point of being /out/. It is the journey, not the destination. Not only do you get to be alone in nature, you get to fish spots that are rarely hit so the hungry little trout moufs will go after anything. Also anon, where was this? I live near Portland and fish the Tillamook woods for cutthroat. It is great because the few people out there are only there for hiking and the streams the trails follow are full of 4-9 inch cut throat that will go after any fly I toss at them as long as it is brightly colored. Newfag trying to learn fly fishing. Im confused with these measurements with the leader as compared to the fly line. Also my flies have a number next to a # sign. Idk if that’s supposed to indicate a size or what. Im aware it needs to be the correct size with the leader or else itll fuck up the presentation. They provide a completely free, detailed explanation from the basics to the complex. I would start with them anon, as many other youtubers and stuff are complete morons and don't explain it well. Orvis does. Fly fishing numbering for fly line, leaders, tippet, and fly sizes are all kind of confusing at first and what you are supposed to use with what can change drastically depending on species targeted and water type fished.

As for the X sizes, the reason you don't see the X sizes on that specific leader is it is geared towards bass fishing and is a specialty leader. It is probably closer to 0x or 1X. For leader and tippet, the closer the X is to 0 the thicker diameter and higher lb test it is. The lower, closer to 7, is very fine and lower lb test. You ideally want your leader and tippet to taper down into a point. This helps with presentation and energy dispersal. For example, I trout fish a lot with a 5x leader, then have a 5x or 6x tippet on it depending on circumstances. This makes it taper nicely. You can always go LOWER than your leader X size (1 to 2, 4 to 5, etc) but if you do the reverse it will make casting a bitch (example, using a 6x leader then 4x tippet). Fly line wt can be used with lots of different X size leaders, but again, depends on a lot of things.

Many seem to think fly fishing is some weird, complex, convoluted system of magic numbers and weird casting. While some of it is true, it is just another (granted, unique and not as popular) hobby and version of fishing. ORvis does a great job of explaining it with videos, pictures, and diagrams. Also, if you have an Orvis store nearby, it may be worthwhile to schedule a class with them. I think the beginning classes are free or cheap. At the very least, go in and talk to them. They will probably try to sell you a $1200 spey rod but ignore them, most are happy to help.

They can cut fluoro with their teeth. From what I've seen people use fluoro leaders that are 80lbs test to prevent breaks, but this seems like an excessive cost because pike aren't line shy to begin with. Keep using wire or use a mono leader that's heavy enough (50-80lb). I don't think straight braid is a good idea because if their teeth knick it the line can fray.

X rating refers to line diameter, i largely ignore it because i tie my own leaders out of regular line and tippet is a scam. Ot goes from 0x-8x, you'll never realistically be in a situation where you need finer than 6x, i dont care how small your trico is. The number next to the # indocates hook size, #12 is a size 12 hook, #4 is a size 4 hook. As for line size matching fly size, dont worry about it too much. The biggest draw from filleting a gar is that the SCALES are absolutely tough as rock. You literally have to use tin snippers just to fillet them. I have had them only once and helped fillet them (by holding the fish down because I didn't know how to fillet them) and let me tell ya, it was the most amazing fish I have ever tasted in my life. We grilled some of them and even deep fried them and they tasted delicious both ways of cooking. Eating a gar as a delicacy makes way more sense than eating a pufferfish (and is much less risky because the poison is much easier to avoid in the gar than the pufferfish). Not to mention the gars fillets look much cleaner (like pearly teeth) and I can imagine tastes much better. If cut cleanly (and the fish is big enough). The fillets literally look this beautiful with 0% chance of bones

What type of water? Also will you be fishing one area that you have property on, or will you be fishing multiple places? Yaks are great for jumping around, and although the right ones handle waves exceptionally, paddling in the wind. Rowboats on the other hand are actually worse in big waves (swamping) than a decent sit in yak, but you can put a 100$ electric motor and enjoy not paddling and cover more water. You can even put a 9.9 and go wherever you want. Problem is while yaks are easy to throw on any moving vehicle, rowboats require a trailer, or a pickup. You can find "cartoppers" light enough to lift, but i promise you won't enjoy heaving a 200 pound wet boat on your car at 949pm after a long day on the water, in addition to dragging it on shore. So now you are thinking trailers. Most 12-14" aluminum boats come with trailers. You can usually find shityy ones for around 500 bucks, and they'll get the job done. (After an aggravating process of getting it registered, inspected, putting the dumb stickers on in the EXACT pattern you have to (in some states you need to register boats with motors of any kind) or else a sheriff will bug you about it. That said, a boat makes for a better day on your back, arms, and soul than a yak. Choice is yours.

Musky anon here. Take the flouro pill. They're pretty good with jerkbaits and stuff. Wire cuts fish up when they roll , and thats no good. I love flouro leaders. Used to use 20# mono, which actually worked exceptionally, but i got a pack of 12" 120# leaders and thats all I use for musky. For like river pike I'll use lighter leader ones I make myself (12-20 lbs) but when throwing big baits, i can't afford anything less than 80#

If you're worried about the fish you can use coated and supple wire leaders which don't cut the fish or use short 6-8" single strand which will never touch the fish. But I agree with you, do not go under 80#, I have see it get bit through first hand. The main reasons that I don't use fluoro is a 10" bucktail stuck in their mouth is probably more damaging than a cut or two, baits are expensive, flies take a while to tie, and I dont want to introduce a possibility no matter how small of losing a 50"+ fish.

If you do take the fluoro pill just remember its not 100% bite proof even at 220#. What time of year do you normally fish pike and how closely do they follow? You can try doing a figure 8 like musky fishing. I have caught a few big pike on the figure 8, even if you cant see them anymore odds are they are still near your lure and showing the side profile of the bait triggers a strike.

I'm a beginner, have no previous experience with pikes I started looking for them about two weeks ago when temperatures started to drop. They were following the lure untill my line would be almost vertical then I only tried to do some vertical animations or tiny twitches because I didn't want them to notice me (I'm usualy wading). Didn't know the figure 8 technique, it will be useful in some situations, thanks
Anyway bought some fluoro, I will try it tomorrow morning. Eventualy f it turns out it as no noticable effect regarding frequency of unsuccesful follow-ups, I will happily get back to wire

Anyone have any idea what's the closest thing to a jigging rap but for casting? This is true. I once tried soaking it in water and salt over night and it literally came out like jelly (rinsing them is fine tho). The same can be said for bullheads. You have to cook them right away when you get home. Freezing/refrigerating them after they are cooked is fine
