Any runners here?

Started doing uphill running a lot more for exercise and I think I'd like to start trailrunning properly

Think I can get a cheap vest from decathlon here. What else do I need to get started?

You honestly don’t need anything. I see retards buy camelbaks and water vests and energy juices and they are not even running anything longer than 3 miles lol. Get yourself a $50 pair of Asics and a smart watch and you’ll be good to go

How about training? I see a lot of races here are like 30k, I'd love to compete but I don't think I've ever even run that far before. Just a case of mapping out long routes at the weekends and doing them?

I just recently did a stretch of Pacific Crest trail..about 14 miles...in Snoqualmie NF. It was glorious. Doing Katy Ridge Benchmark peak next..I fucking love it.

some good socks..I picked up a pair of damn tough socks and the are really good to my feet..anti monkey but powder is good as well. I usually take a stinger with me if I do more tha 10 miles...Just recently picked up some bear spray just in case I startle one plowing down a trail.

anti monkey butt is a talcum powder preparation used to reduce friction and moisture. it works really well. i use it on my balls every couple of days simply to prevent odor and keep my underwear lasting longer between washes.

stinger is a gel pack of flavored honey..it is great to slurp one back at about ten miles or so when you feel the wall creeping up...can grab them pretty cheap on amazon..stinger is just the brand I use.Any glucose shot will do really

for me it is usually feels like I can't maintain momentum..Sometimes its hard to tell when you are trudging up a steep grade but if it lingers after you flatten out for a bit its time to take the glucose shot and go full humming bird. I usually have a nice big carby meal the night before, and it seems to stave it off..Just be sure to get all the poos out before your run..There is nothing fun about trying to peel off sweaty shorts behind a bush before the rocket shits hit and you are 5-10 miles out. I find a nice big cup of black cold brew does the trick. Also don't forget to Vaseline up those nipples if you are running any real distance. Good luck!

oh you'll know. i'd say it starts around 10 miles and gets progressively worse. for me it is an incredibly deep fatigue that I almost feel in my bones. an overwhelming feeling of no energy anywhere in your body. it really sucks.

Can swear by this. I had a friend in scouts who was an amputee and used in on his prosthetic where he’d fit it to his knee, his calf was lost In some freak accident on his right leg as a child.

Run barefoot and the sandals, usually 1 layer at least 80% of the year, uphill - down - sideways doesn't matter. 10k a day, at the least.

I have one Swiss "half-bag" I can sling it cross shoulder or hip, it can fit a couple liters of water, 10k calories, and first aid supplies pretty easily.
I could easily put a water bladder and hose in it if I thought I needed it too.

I'd say just don't bother with a bag until you someday need a dedicated running pack. One bottle of water and somewhere to stuff a bar/sandwich/gel will get you far enough. Things like pouch belts/handheld bottles.

I only use the bag on hotter days going in excess of 15kish or going in a new/unknown area away from my locale, we have good water at our parks and pedestrian trails around here and I rarely need to fuel up on any run in a single day (but I can also add food stops on my run, I have probably mapped out every public fruiting plant and garden spot in a three city circle here).

There's a 20k race in October that I might be interested in doing. The course looks doable, though knowing here it's likely with a LOT of elevation. 7 hours is the cutoff for it.

If there are still spots I might try and run the course some weekend - I actually think you could walk it in 7 hours tbqh so not that big a deal, but we'll see once we get out there

Humping it at a conservative 3mph you should expect 4.5 hours ish.
You should be shooting for about 5mph if you don't know the terrain that well, but are decently trained in general.

This. I've been running for 11 years and I only started using camelbacks when I started doing ultras.

I would get some type of small waist pack though. Just to carry nutrition and a phone. You don't want to fuck up your ankle and not be able to call for help.

I recommend investing in a good pair of trail shoes. A good pair will last you over 500 miles and make a huge difference. I personally use Altra Lone Peaks but the zero drop isn't for everyone. Hoka and Altra are the better brands but go to REI and try a bunch on.

Seven hours is 100% doable for 20k on rough terrain. The cutoff for races up to 50k is typically meant for people who are hiking rather than running.

And even hiking, you'd have to be pretty out of shape or the terrain would have to be really gnarly to miss that cutoff.

Like Spartans or Tough Mudders? Don't. They're frankly overpriced and normie-tier.

My rule of thumb: events with more than 1,000 people and/or websites with pics of groups of basic-looking white girls generally aren't worth your money.

The best races are the ones that are small, reasonably priced for what you get, and marketed mostly through word of mouth.

That said, if it's a charity event for a cause you care about, just do it. I don't normally do any events under a half-marathon these days, but there are a handful of short races for causes I support I try to go to every year.

I'd recommend doing an ultra. A 50-mile trail run should put them in their place. You'll have a lot more fun, meet some really cool people who love the outdoors, and it will be better all-around value.

Xero Shoes makes a couple kinds of shoes that are basically their sandal beds with an enclosed upper. I've never personally tried them, but they do claim a 5000 mile sole warranty with most of their products.

Greetings and wish you a good start.
Some pairs of running sorts and shirts obviously, capable shoes (don't spare the money here, it's for your own health and safety) and a simple vest (I've always used the old "sense 1" from Salomon in all my trail marathons and it was adequate and fine).
p.s. don't get batons, do it the manly way and carry yourself with your back and knees.

Have a 5-mile trail that's basically all steep ascent/descent that I ran in 75mins last night, which is slow for here but a big improvement on what I was doing before

Will try and get that down to an hour as my next milestone, then maybe try the 20k at a slower pace and see what happens

I wouldn't bother with them, there's enough proven trail shoes out there for the same price. Especially if you're doing any kind of distance, not the place to take chances.

I've seen one at a phone place before, doesn't seem too bad but I'd wanna know what the payments are like for the service. I was just looking at that. It is pretty pricey 350 for the initial..then you could do 15$ for a month no contract..the 10 cents per tracking point..so a 3 hour trail run would cost about 3.60 if you set the tracking to 5 min intervals. Compared to the spot it seems a ton better, but it is definitely more expensive.

If you're new to trail running, take things super slow at first and don't go too deep into the woods/mountains. If you get far enough into the backcountry, a fall like that could be a day of terror and uncertainty. It might not seem like much, but running long distances on technical trails shouldn't be taken lightly.
