I'm sure most of us were in the scouting organisation at some point, time to swap lessons learnt and other tales over an imaginary campfire and throw sticks at that kid who wants to sing 'ginganggoolie'

There were actually a few boys at my troop who were the type who would try and get a campfire song going. I was a helper for years and I made my opinions on campfire faggotry very clear.

I like to think I was a voice of reason in an otherwise shorts and caps troop.

I was never a proper boy scout, just a cub scout for 3 years. As an adult I got involved with the BSA working at Northern Tier as a charlie guide. A few things I've noticed about the crews I've taken into the woods;

o) Even Eagle Scouts don't know how to tie a two half hitch. Holy God what have they been doing?!
o) I've only ever had one single scout who could light a fire using a fire striker. Seriously, what are you guys just jacking off during your campouts?
o) As bad as some scouts can be, 9 times out of 10 the scout masters have even less of an idea what they're doing.
o) Scouts and their advisors don't actually give half a shit about what the "right" thing to do is. They'll take an easy way out if you let them, even if it goes against LNT. Most of the crews I've met aren't religious, either. Therefore their "moral high ground" stance against gay leaders is complete BS. They're just homophobes.

Also I'm a bi adult leader in the BSA and I've gotten consistently good reviews on my adult / youth evaluations. If the example I'm setting for these scouts is too gay and immoral, none of these guys seem to have noticed.

No it isn't. That is a common misconception, though. It comes from people misinterpreting some very vague lines to serve their own purposes, much like most Bible-related conflict. If you see people who actually support that idea, they should not be respected as truly religious.

I was in the air force cadets in like year seven to year nine. Just before I joined though two things happened:

1. a kid dropped a .22 rifle, which fired (which is highly unlikely, this was a one in a million thing) meaning that we couldn't do any shooting
2. a kid who was allergic to nuts decided to eat a military ration pack named 'SATAY PEANUT CHICKEN' and ended up dying, which meant a whole fuckload of new paperwork needed for every trip to safeguard against this shit, essentially making organising camps a nightmare

Basically, we couldn't shoot, we couldn't camp, we couldn't eat from ration packs (which meant shitty food cooked at a central kitchen we had to return to each night when in the field).

I got to fly a cessna for half an hour though, and got to visit a couple of air force bases and play around with some night vision goggles. all in all a fuckin waste of two years though, only went camping three times i think

And before Ranger says some shit about scouting being an exclusively Christian organization, it's not. Scouting is an international phenomenon, America's branch is one of the only organizations that is actually this selective about group membership. Every other country is both co-ed and secular. That being said, I'm glad they made the membership change. Hopefully it'll ween out the troops that are purely there for the "good, old-fashioned, traditional values".

Also, that one fag mentioning that shit about Boy Scouts knowing jack worth shit is totally right. It's actually pretty embarrassing, but I think it's largely contributed to by the fact that scouting appeals to youth on the lower side of the age bell curve. I remember my troop being filled to the brim with younger, ADHD-riddled shits that would never shut the fuck up while a small oligarchy of older scouts actually tried to get shit done.

I was a camp leader in year eleven though, which meant I got to go on camps with the younger year levels to help the teachers keep control, and so the younger kids had someone to talk to about whatever.

I got to go on the year eight camp, which was four days of canoeing around and then one day of hiking, was actually pretty awesome.

I find the child protection has gone to far now, all of the leaders get a card with about 20 instructions on it for keeping children safe, fair enough. But we now have to behave as if we are always being monitored for pedophilia. We are not allowed into the scouts tents or allowed to talk one to one with them. We get CRB checked whenever we change roles in the organisation and only recently one of my friends was kicked out without actually doing anything, the senior leaders just assumed and went around asking all of the scouts if they had been touched inappropriately, none had of course and after being told so they still did not revise their decision.

While BSA may, on paper, be a 'private organization', they've historically marketed themselves as the club that every boy can, and should, be in. It's completely contradictory to uphold this sorta self-perpetuating advertisement -and- exclude certain minorities. Then it wouldn't be the Boy Scouts of America, it'd be the Boy Scouts of America, Without Minorities.

The problems people have with the BSA is that you can't have your cake and eat it to. You can't say you represent America, when you go against American ideals. That's the issue, not some petty 'hurr durrr private organization sekrit club' bullshit. In the end, every kid should be able to learn the same lovely outdoors stuff any other kid can, without prejudice.

Anyone should be allowed in scouts, end of story. I wholeheartedly believe in that.

The younger clan in scouting is so damn lazy. Im worried for the future of the group.

Overall it was a great experience. I still go camping on my own, even though I'm out of scouting for almost two years now. That may not sound weird but not many kids will ever pick up their sleeping bag again after leaving.

Just curious, did anyone else ever go to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico? I went in 2000. Something like 12 days 11 nights of hiking. The hikes topped out at ~90 miles so it was pretty leisurely with plenty of time for activities/resting.

I think it was a bit harder than just signing up. I seem to recall my troop having several adults mass dialing Philmont which registration opened up to get a spot. If I recall correctly, there are more Eagle Scouts than scouts that have gone to Philmont.
