I’m in Louisiana. Here, Texas, some parts of California, and south Florida are ground-zero for the feral hog explosion in the US.
Their spread really didn’t start until the 1980’s. And even then it wasn’t in the outdoor milieu in the US. To this day everything is still about bears and mountain lions. And we know those animals because it’s been documented for centuries. The average hiker knows jack shit about feral hogs.
A group of hogs is called a sounder, and sounders are almost exclusively female. They’re often run by a matriarch rather than an alpha, ie an older pig rather than the biggest or meanest. The only time you’ll see males within sounders is when they’ve grouped up to breed or young pigs that haven’t been run out of the group yet. Males will usually be solo, but will group up with other males.
Hogs will false charge as a way to ward off threats. They’ll run at you, stop about 30 feet short, then trot away as a show of size and strength.
Mostly they’ll just run off (like all mammals). I’ve seen sows run off ahead of their piglets. Pretty funny actually. It’s interesting to watch such a large animal run off squealing like it’s being murdered. They’re both graceful and clumsy at the same time. They can leap and zigzag around trees, while at the same time not give a fuck and just trample bushes.
OPs question is a non-sequitur; hogs just run away, so you wouldn’t have to do anything.
