It shoots straight and lands softly. A more aggressive taper would load better with less line out but I'm getting ghostly presentations which is pretty cool. I'm throwing my beadheads/coneheads and streamers on the 9wt so I don't really care if this rod only throws dries and mini buggers

Nowadays it seems like the only way to catch a fish over 2lbs is to use a ned rig.

Salmon river is nothing like regular fishing. Salmon river fishing is nut to butt degenerates crossing lines and snagging half rotten pcb tainted fish that cause birth defects. People cross other's lines and get into fights. Ive heard someone had a gun pulled on them once. I've gone, never again. Seriously. Montgomery County Maryland reporting. Got my collapsable net ring trap. It's been raining here a bunch and with rising sea levels, Ellicott City main street becomes part of the bay every so often but really I'm a western shoresman and we only get the bay and not the ocean but I'm way too north I think to travel south of Quantico just for my own crabs which may suck from the Potomac.

Halp, wheres as far north and west in Maryland I can catch crabs without tossing my pot into the refuse of Baltimore. I'd rather use a tributary north of it if anyone knows some good spots to toss and go fishing while you wait.

Drop shot will start to work if you fish environments with little or no crayfish habitat where the bass are forced to eat baitfish. I will also put a ned plastic on a small jig to help it broadcast. Mostly I drag a brown beadhead woolly bugger and they love it.

Once they get to about the size of pic related they are almost exclusively over gravel picking on crayfish. Big protein boost they don't have to chase

This makes sense. My local pond has border of large rocks and I've caught two 4#ers, three 3#ers, and numerous 2#ers simple dragging my ned rig over the mud where the rocks and the mud meet. I guess they're over the rocks and when they see the mud kick up they go investigate. In fact one of the 4#ers I caught was in about 7" of water over the rocks when I was hopping the the rig back quickly to make another cast.

Okay so, depending on the size of the bait fish normally some thing the size of a Green Back Shiner will kinda work with a #2 circle hook you have two ways you can hook bait fish one is from the bottom of the mouth and then out the top above the nose.
The other way is to hook it in the middle of the back by the back tail.
Only downfall about some bait fish is they will likely die just from the shock of having a hook put in them.
Also don't use a sinker because a sinker will just make the bait fish unable to swim so it will drowned.
Reel and Rod and line all depends on the size bait and fish.

Any anons ever smoke fish? My dad has a smoker that i got him for Father's day and he's obsessed with it. Smoked fish is my favorite way to eat them, and I was wondering what fish are good. I was thinking of getting a chrome steelie for him once they start running. Best fish i ever had smoked was a whitefish, and those are hard to target by me. Spin fishing is the most common form of fishing. Most Americans are overweight or obese. Yes, I smoke just about everything I catch. Lots of rainbow trout end up in my smoker. Brining is essential with a mix of salt, brown sugar, and water. I don’t use a lot of other seasonings but some people do. I also prefer milder woods like apple or cherry, maybe some alder. Mesquite or hickory are gonna be too strong. As a rule of thumb, any somewhat fatty fish will be great in the smoker. Get it just warm enough to render the fat and the oil will absorb the smoke flavor and permeate throughout the meat.

Spent some time messing around at a drainage ditch, caught three like this but this guy was by far the most acrobatic. He jumped twice and tailwalked a good 10 feet. I was surprised that they liked a fast two handed retrieve.

Rods are so tempormental that tips break even if you're on the top end of the rating so doubling the max is a bad idea. At the very most I'd say you can pitch your lures, but full on casting them is going to lead to heart ache.

I managed to get my first 2 bass on a topwater today. I got there at 7, caught 1 on a chatterbait first, then 2 on a topwater then 2 on a spinnerbait and called it quits around 12.

When I got there there was a little wind and overcast. I got some blowups in a little cove that was a bit more sheltered from the wind. I did notice however that as soon as the wind stopped around 9:30 or so, and the sun started to shine a bit brighter through the clouds the bite became extremely tough. I threw dropshot, plastics, spinnerbaits, chatter baits, jigs.

Nothing, and the fish were active on the top, I would see them break occasionally on schools of shad, but I couldn't get them to bite. Is this a thing that happens this time of the year? the last 2 weeks had been really good to me at this lake with dropshot, plastics, and spinnerbaits.

the lake has no visible structure from shore, just some scattered brush, points, rockpiles and drop offs that I've found in the last month since I started fishing it, so a lot of my casts are into open water. Any tips for what to do if a bite shuts suddenly like that?

In the summer bass spread out everywhere. there's not much pattern with their movements and they tend to pull out deeper in hot sunny weather. Either that or tuck into the shadows.

Anyone ever hear of a diy outboard motor stabilizer, like something to keep the motor from turning when you let go? I tried using bungee cords but was unimpressed. Considering using those hydrolic cylinders you see for like storm doors and patio doors with the spring and the cylinder. Not sure though. Have to agree on this, either bluegill/crappie or pickerel. If it’s the only fish I can fish for for the rest of my life I want to be able to catch it year round and taste decent. I'd wager that people who like the fight the most use spinning reels and people who like the catch the most use baitcasters.
Personally I learned how to fish using a baitcaster with squarebills and eventually I moved on to Texas rigs, but one day I on a whim bought spinning gear to drop shot with and ever since then I only want to use spinning gear now.
If I'm going to a local pond or creek and the biggest fish I'm going to catch is a 3 pounder and if I'm really lucky a 4 pounder I want to get the most out of fighting small fish and spinning gear gives me that.

Those are only really effective in the ocean, where glowing bits are often squid or jellyfish.

Night fishing you're fishing mostly by scent, so bait can be pretty effective.

Motion can work too, but you need to know how to work a lure.

Your best bet is to catch bluegill or shad and use that as either live bait or cut bait depending on what species your targeting. I find that the heads tend to attract catfish more than any other part.

Depends on the time of year. Fall and spring, they'll venture further inland, summer, they tend to be deeper, but still bank fishable. Winter, they're slow and deep. They don't really hunt, but they'll eat if something is right in front of them.

HOWEVER, if the US-Canada border opens after Sept. 21st (which probably won't happen but that's the current date), you are going to see a fuckload of fishermen coming up from Washington/Oregon. The columbia runs have been pretty good, but you only get 1 fish, and Puget Sound is fucking abysmal for salmon. I've managed some success out on the water, but the salmon numbers are even worse than last year, which was already horrendously bad. With how bad fishing is down there, and how comparatively great fishing in canada is, BC is going to be absolutely swarmed, and that's not including the tourists who are going to pack the roads up.

The retail ones are nothing. A lot of the folks by me are into local or costom made jerkbaits/trolling cranks for skis, and those run 45 bucks used, 60-80 each new minimum. That said, a cabellas brand musky bait that was 7 bucks caught my brother his first ski when we went for them together for the first time.

My Vanford from Japan arrived today and I managed to spool it up and get on the water about 20mins before sundown and luckily I caught a fish in that short window.
First impression is I like that the drag is clicky and louder than a Daiwa drag, but I like how Daiwa's drag adjusts with fewer turns. It's definitely smooth but doesn't feel as smooth or refined as my Luvias but to be fair a Luvias is closer to a Twin Power than a Vanford. The Vanford is smoother than my Tatula LTs, but the Tatula LTs have less resistance than the Vanford. I strongly prefer the knob that Daiwa puts on their handles as well.
I'd say it's more refined and less loose than a Tatula LT, but it's also $40 more expensive.
I can't comment on casting distance because I only threw a 1/16oz Okashira Screwhead with a 3" Sparkshad, but it seemed effortless enough. Maybe if I tie on something heavier later I'll see if the long stroke spool is a good as cracked up to be.

Rod is a 6'10" Curado ML. It balances on the blank slightly in front of the locking nut (this might be less of a problem on a heavier rod like a Medium power). 20lb Berkley x9 and around 80 yards of I had to guess (I have a little room for more line but I don't want to use it because casting is more manageable this way). Not bad for a shallow spool when I only cast 25 yards 90% of the time. It is rated to hold 95m of 6lb nylon mono.

In all honesty I don't think I've ever thrown something that heavy. I have only used 3/32oz ultraheads, 1/6oz ned rigs, light screwheads, weightless plastics, and drop shots using a 1/8oz.
I have flipped numerous bass up to 2lbs on to the bank comfortably and only use a net if they're 3+, so it has that going for it.
If you're worried about the 1/16oz difference you can get the 6'10"ML XF Daiwa Tatula rod since it's rated 1/16-3/8oz and is $10 cheaper than the Curado rod.

Funny enough I own that Curado rod as well, and even funnier is I accidentally put the Vanford on that Curado instead of the ML, so all that stuff I said about balancing only applies to the 6'10" M not the ML. When I get the chance I'll put the Vanford on my ML and see if it balances better (which it should since it's a lighter rod).
The biggest difference between the M and ML Curado rods is that the M has a stiffer tip. I like it for wacky rigs because it's so stiff I can feel a bite on slack line very easily.

I've been fishing almost every weekend for the past two years and I've only managed to catch one northern pike and one perch (i'm in europe)

Why the fuck is it so hard to catch fish?

Well I try. I figured if I keep fishing for long enough, eventually I will start catching fish.

Usually I start fishing just before sunrise or sunset. But sometimes I fish in the middle of the day to switch it up. I fish mostly on the Rhine, but also on small ponds, canals, lakes and whatnot.

I have tried a variety of crankbaits, jigs/creaturebaits, texas and carolina rigs, spinners and spoons. I have a whole assortment of all those baits in different sizes, materials and colors.

The rig I use the most is basically just a jighead with a soft rubber bait. With weights ranging from 10g to 50g depending on how strong the current is. The technique for that is just the standard jigging method: cast out, wait for the weight to hit the bottom, jig the bitch a bit and reel it in to keep the line tight.

^ this method landed me a big ass perch. The northern pike was accidentally snagged so that doesn't even really count.

Going down to the canal later today when I wake up it's 6 am now been up all night so I'll get up maybe around 5 pm and go throw the cast net a few times in the canal see what all I can catch.
Some guy claimed that tarpon have been caught in the canal I'm having my doubts because that canal doesn't have a lot of saltwater in it. The water is mainly run off from rain.

Is it bad to leave your pole in one of the holders with bait for like 10 minutes, and then come back to it later? Most of the time I have caught a catfish, meaning all of the time. The hooks are always stuck in their throat through so I have to cut it and look my hook. Is that because I leave them hooked on it to long?

Your hook is either too small or you are using J hooks ? (use a circle hook instead) But either way yeah you can't leave a fish unattended for long periods of time without risking them gut hooking themselves.

Ah i wasnt sure if leaving them on the hook for 3-5 minutes was why they keep getting gut hooked. I am just using a standard gold hook with a barb on it. Hard to get them out because of the barb. But ive caught 9 fish and they have all been the sail catfish in the tampa bay

For bottom weighted rigs (eg. drop shot, high low, etc) braid. This is because if it is windy out or there is a lot of current or waves, the mono will get stretched out like an old whore and I will need to use an over-sized weight to maintain enough tension to feel the bites. For example on my surf rod braid main line is a no brainer. When it comes to light tackle in ponds and streams mono works just fine but still risk getting blown out on windy days.

I am not a big catfish guy but when I am fishing for bullhead I set the hook immediately with no issues. When people are going for some giants I see they wait sometimes for like 30 secs to a minute before they go for the hook set (i guess waiting for the catfish to have a good purchase on the bait). 3 to 5 minutes sounds like its way too long in just about any case. Most fish I am setting the hook immediately but there is some species where you have to pause for a few moments before going for the hook set.

Molds seem to run anywhere from 40-100+. If you google lure works you'll find a bunch of varying sizes (thank Roland). It's definitely something I'd look at investing in myself eventually.

Will a twisted leader be ok for coho fishing? I wanted something with a taper but don’t want to go to the store so I twisted my own leader (basically a furled leader). Anybody ever go on guided fly fishing trips? I was thinking about going on one next time I'm in Florida for tarpon. Is there a minimum skill requirement? I can hit 80ft casts pretty easily without crutch lines and I'm a fairly accomplished freshwater fly fisherman. Is that enough?

If you use a longer 9ft leader and split shot/weighted fly you will be fine. I've only ever fished steelhead but 7 or 8wts with at least 100 yards of backing are probably the best option for cohos. I will also unconditionally recommend the "Egg Sucking Dolly Llama" aka "Dolly Llama with Egg" for any salmonid.

Would this poly leader work for a 9ft 8wt? On all the poly leaders on Amazon they didn’t really have different sizes so I assume it doesn’t matter. Does it matter that this is a 10ft leader? i usually use a 9ft leader but amazon only has 10ft leaders.
