I want to get into this. I know the basics of fishing but the piers have been shitty and i feel like this will more rewarding. I'll be in southern California harbors and bays mostly.

Anyone do this and can you give me a rundown on the basics and how to start? What is mandatory/what is suggested but i can get away without as far as setting up a kayak.

Also would love an affordable rod/reel recommendations.
