How does Utah overall hold up as a state for would be homesteaders?

I would imagine due to the land and soil it may be tricky having a garden, but livestock may be a better suited path. With its elevation would it be hard to establish a well?

Can any Utah anons chime in?

Most of the state is fairly worthless desert (beautiful though). The parts that aren't desert and are good for farming are already occupied and will likely be prohibitively expensive. Also depends what you mean by "homesteading". If you just want to live away from the city and have chickens/gardens that augment your regular grocery purposes then yea it's very doable, but you are still going to have a job/semi-normal life. If you are trying to go fully self-sufficient there are better parts of the county for that (midwest farmland). And don't expect to be able to just hunt willy-nilly either. Law enforcement in Utah is notoriously strict and the parks/game warden cops are no exception.

this. the land you'd buy for homesteading is going to be ridiculously expensive. Utah is awesome but i would recommend one of the surrounding states for a homestead.

True if you are just grazing them and fwiw it's cruel to keep a single cow. They are a herd animal and will be constantly stressed without others.

Too broad of a question. All three of those are massive states with a wide variety of terrains. In general though CO is expensive as shit and Idaho is always on fire.

Work would be an added bonus but I could theoretically find work for my would be profession anywhere as long as there is people(locksmith) but to answer your question its moreover the latter, I don't like using the word apocalypse though, easiest way to put it is I just took the Kacyznski-pill and want to have my family away from clown world, I figured the way the country is right now and where we are possibly headed we have a few more years left(if Trump wins) to prepare until the fireworks start going off; I don't want to derail this thread though with that irrelevant topic. We had our first garden this year and are looking into getting an RV to offgrid off of when we buy land until we can build a permanent structure.

That's a shame to hear about Idaho. I'm aware of the fires but didn't know they were a big problem up in Idaho. How about Wyoming?

There's a reason most of the state is still basically uninhabited. High desert is not a forgiving biome. Lovely state but not for what you're describing.

Southern Utah is generally decent however invest in something like Agribon sheeting if you’re gonna grow anything since the weather is erratic and you’ll have nights get below freezing in late summer. Also winters are longish and the only crops grown on a truly massive scale are ones which are cold hardy or have a quick turnover. Most farms in the area usually grow hay too so if you have animals you’ll have a cheapish source of hay.
