seriously? most trails are paved, most are less than 5 miles round trip and Angel's landing might be the most overrated hike in history

May I recommend the scenic Monongahela national forest in West Virginia?

tldr is learn a lot of knots. You need several locking, load bearing carabiners, a harness, a belay device, rope, and webbing. There's a climbing general on here, other guides online, and many clubs for rock climbing which can be of use to you.

check out kolob canyons next time, that definitely wasn't the case in that part of the park. that part's also way less busy. i think it's closed right now though, because of course the safest thing to do during covid according to the nps is funnel even more people into the main canyon.

Zion in the offseason is fantastic. I went back in January on a weekday when they had the shuttles down for maintenance. Took my car into the main canyon, then got out and decided to walk around. There were so few people around, it was something I'd never seen before. I had never seen bighorns in the main canyon before.

Off and shoulder seasons are the way to go fren. Same zion poster from above: me and the wife vacation and stay in Estes Park and do hikes in RMNP in Oct-Jan and its great. Estes Park isn't crammed and the trails are sparse and open. As long as you're comfortable with the cold and have some good spikes to hike in its great and the winter landscape is awesome. Just have to be comfortable with the fact that the ice and snow is going to make for slower hikes on the trails, and plan daylight hours accordingly but who's rushing?
