What do you guys wear when the weather gets fuggin cold. Everyone around me shills pic related, I'm not against them but it feels like half the price goes towards making a fashion statement. What are some decent looking warm winter coats

Anyway. Since this is /out/, consider layering wool, fleeces and puffys under a shell garment (might also be a thin padded garment) instead of getting a thick down jacket that may be too warm for many situations.

I've got a Cabela's down parka. It's nice but it's too hot to wear above 0F, and it rarely gets that cold here anymore. Wool/fleece, with a goretex shell and a cheaper synthetic parka for the colder days is fine.

I have an Arc'teryx Cerium LT, I really love it. I've walked through branches and shit, drunk and high off my ass to hang my ursack, and never had it rip on me. Yeah, feathers poke out every now and then, but every down jacket I've owned did this.

If you want the absolute best down jacket, not caring about the branding, FEATHERED FRIENDS wins this competition. They're inexpensive for the amount of down fill you get and the quality of down they put in. Canadian Goose Down is one of the fucking worst. Even an Arc'teryx down jacket, a brand that's renowned for being faggots and hiking the price up big time, will cost less than a CGD equivalent, have more fill, and better down.

For /out/ shit I wear an Austrian surplus m65 style parka and an appropriate amount of wool under it. Carhartt and Flison make some pretty good quality coats if you want something new, and you could always go for an outdoor/technical centered brand as well like Patagonia.
I've never had experience with the canada goose jackets but fron what I've heard they are pretty warm and overpriced.

Just layer more mid-layers in. I've been in a blizzard in a thin shirt, two fleece layers and a hard shell and I had to take out a fleece layer because it was too warm.

I'm warmer and more comfy in a t-shirt, sweater, and decent hoodie than an expensive, single R-value winter jacket.
If it's really cold, -25c or below, just add another hoodie
Add good gloves, socks, long underwear and a comfy toque you can roll down over your ears and you're perfect.

Beautiful jacket, I love it a lot. Brought it to Gaspé mid winter and I felt nice and toasty the whole time.

Problem for me is that I run hot and tend to get too warm, so unless the weather drop below -25 degrees Celsius or so, I just wear my padded Levi's jacket with a sweater underneath. Much more venting because you essentially have no wind protection.

I live in a major city for my province, so I don't have to face the elements for more than 20 min chunks, and I'm usually moving.

wearing these anywhere south of the natural range of polar bears is overkill. I see them all the time at ski hills its always chinese, indians or toronto fags. Even waiting for the bus it doesn't get cold enough anything colder than -25 is rare. These are the coats mining exploration companies buy their workers in the N.W.T and Yukon, the warmest winter temps there are still lower than Toronto's coldest day.

That's my point. In Toronto you'd have to be waiting an hour for a suburban bus on a windy -20 night at a stop without a shelter to make one worthwhile, otherwise you sweat your ass off. I'm the guy with the Cabelas parka (i inherited it, didn't buy it) and I've worn it maybe 3 times in 10 years in the city.

At least since Canada Goose got popular Torontofags don't whine as much about how cold it is whenever it gets below -5 because they're trying to get through winter with a pea jacket and a hipster scarf. That was embarassing too.

Dealing with your extremities is the most important thing when it gets cold. Good gloves, hat, scarf and footwear count for a lot. A wool sweater or fleece will keep you warm as long as you have a wind layer.

You’re almost always overpaying for the brand name with Patagonia. Only thing of theirs I’d really say justifies the price is their bulkier shirts. The look, durability and comfort on those stacks up favourably against comparable brands like Filson.

There is no miracle jacket that's good for all occasions. You can have a shit-tier outer jacket as long as you layer properly, and it will be easier to adapt to different conditions rather than have your super puffy quantum goose down -200c jacket.

You don't see Albertans wearing Canada Goose basically ever, and you've probably heard how cold prairie winters get. If you're raised there, two hoodies, scarf and a toque is sufficient usually. You go to a pub on the weekend and girls scurry from bar to bar in miniskirts with chilled pink legs and high heels during a snowstorm with nothing but the liquor to keep them warm. Carhartts are especially popular there, As are snowboarding jackets like another anon said before me.
