Where is all the rain? If I didn’t know better I’d think the chinamen are using weather weapons against us. My local brook trout river is lower than I’ve ever seen it. I think given the heat wave and low rainfall it actually saved them because flow was coming mostly from feeder streams and ground water flow vs the pond in its headwaters. I think brook trout populations took a big hit this summer trout fishing going to be slow over the winter and next spring.

Not sure if this guys is still here, but I live in San Diego and go out on the sport boats 4-5 times a year. On a 1.5 day I would load that speedmastes up with 50lb braid and a 30yard topshot of 25lb mono with about 3-5' of 25lb flouro and a #2 flyliner or circle hook. That will handle and yellowtail, dorado or schoolie tuna. The second rig I would take is a 40-60# bait setup in case they bite heavier or you guys run into bigger grade. You can also use this for flat falls in the early morning or rubber band sinker rigs. Keep in contact with your sardine, keep your line straight in front of you, change your bait VERY often (like every 2 min) and spend the time at the bait tank to get a good swimming bait. A healthy bait makes a huge difference. Deckhands are your friends, they want you to catch fish. Fish equals better counts which equal full boats which equal more money.

Thanks, thats just a cheap-o jig head because sometimes its nice to cheat. Hook up ratio doesnt change imo but you hang up slightly less, the main difference is that a jig hook gives a more horisontal presentation.

If I want to fish shiners in cold, deep water from shore, should I fish them under a float or with some kind of egg sinker fish finding rig? If I fish them about 5' under a float, should I use any split shot or just let it swim free? The water drops off pretty fast so 20' from shore can easily be 25' deep in places and the bottom is rocks and gravel.

Any musky/pike fly fishing anons care to chime in. When articulating single hook flies how important is hook position for esox? Would the back hook in figure 1 be any worse than the front hook in figure 2? In figure 1 the hook will be more towards the middle of the body when tied and for figure 2 it will be on the right side of true middle. Since musky T-bone their prey wouldn't figure 1 have a higher hook up ratio? Does any of this even matter considering the size of the fish? Any personal stories or opinions on the matter?

I usually don't use articulated flies for pike because it's more hassle than its worth. I use mostly Pike bunnies and Baitfish patterns on a single hook. If you are thinking of doing an articulated fly I would definitely have the hook in the front not the back. Pike tend to swallow flies more than most fish and the further back the hook on a fly the further it its mouth it will be.

Don't get me wrong, after a day of throwing double 8s or heavy rubber baits musky fishing I feel like an arthritic old woman, but for some reason casting light lures hard is way worse on my elbow. A couple years back I had to take a week off casting UL tubes for bass because of awful lateral epicondylitis. Best weight imo is 1.5 oz. Best lure is inline bucktail. Easiest on the joints.

1. Even though pike usually go headfirst, they also tbone lures. You generally want the hook as far back as possible. If legal, go ahead and do #2 with a stinger hook. Alot of musky spinnerbaits use them, and it's a similar profiles minus the flash. I use the spare single hooks from blue foxes on bass spinnerbaits.

I go pier-fishing in SoCal, and there is always a horde of Viets pulling in hundreds of mackerel, halibut and bait fish, presumably to eat. They typically quit only after filling a 5-gallon bucket with cleaned fish, then leave the mess on the deck. It is filthy, and leaves a huge mess behind. They are also over-fishing the area and making it not as much fun for newer fishermen (I took my nephew out to HB pier a few weeks ago, he only caught a few fish). They are abusing this resource and making it worse for the rest of us.

Is there anything I can do to have them harassed for being so obnoxious? Should I call police for over-fishing? Should I call a game warden?

Hello my based fren. I am a fly fisherman not a spin fag but hopefully I can lend some insight. The more ferrules there are generally the heavier the rod is and the more "hinged" the flex pattern becomes. All of my fly rods are 4 piece (which is the norm) so I don't think a 2 or 3 piece would be too noticeable even though purists will tell you to get a one piece rod.

There are some limited numbers of native and wild freshwater fish but the vast majority of fisheries are supported by stocking operations. You can catch native cutties still, and wild brook trout are common in the high lakes. There are native salmon and steelhead runs but desu I would never keep and eat a native fish unless it was unlikely to survive release. Hatchery fish make great food provided they have been in a natural environment eating stuff other than hatchery pellets for some time.

Yes it is tragic but habitat destruction and fishing pressure take their toll. You can catch and keep hatchery fin-clipped steelhead and Chinook salmon without any guilt however. Hatchery rainbows in clean mountain lakes grow large and delicious and they are fairly safe to eat. What part of the PNW are you in? I'm in the Willamette valley in Oregon myself.

SE Texas here This storm is pushing a bunch of rain my way and muddying up my creek. Stained water really hurts my bass fishing. I usually throw soft swimbaits weightless, the occasional texas rig senko and here lately have been playing with ned rigs. None of those work worth a damn when my creek gets muddy. my problem is that there is a lot of limbs, trees and other crap to snag on so I can't really use a lot of things like spinners that you would normally think of trying in muddy water. Any ideas?

So rn I run mono on both my rods with those little swivel clip nails on the end and then have leaders and weight rigs on barrel swivels so I can plug and play. Fug I think I messed up buying a reel for my new ultra light. I was rushed and picked a 1000 series because I wanted something with low retrieve per handle turn but I didn't realize the same model at a 2000 is literally the same specs, barely faster retrieve but 1.5 the line capacity (x_x)

I kinda want to try. I live rural though. We do have small streams that go under roads here and there is generally a very deep spot on either side. You can kinda fish the tube as well. I catch a lot of creek chubs, bluegill and (in one particular mountain stream) native trout.

I smoke trout on a rigged up system and it works fine for me. Trout are excellent smoked, there is a layer of fat just under the skin and the fat renders during the smoking process and absorbs the smoke flavor, which then soaks into the meat. The key is brining the fish beforehand, which I do overnight in a mix of salt, brown sugar, and water. You can add seasonings if you like but I typically don't

There's a great trick for trout where you smoke them whole (minus the head and tail) until they are just barely cooked. You can then split them in half and pull the bones right out. All you need to do is cut an incision in the skin all along the spine and on the portion remaining from the belly to the tail. This will allow you to split the fish in half.

I use a broiler pan with a thin layer of apple or cherry chips on the bottom and just put it on top of a little gas grill. I set the grill on the lowest possible setting and make a tent over the top of the broiler with aluminum foil. I use a temp probe inside the tent and try to keep the temp below 220 F. At that temp, it will take about 45-60 minutes before you split the fish and another 30-45 minutes after that depending on how well done you like the fish. I usually baste with a little brown sugar syrup after I split them, to keep them nice and moist. As for buying a smoker, I don't really know. My method works fine for small batches and it's easily portable to use innawoods which fits my lifestyle.

Through luck, I met a guy from work who lives with bank and fishing access to the Willamette River in Portland, OR (off Sauvie Island). I now have basically my own private beach to fish off of for salmon and steelhead. Needless to say, pretty stoked. I have my 8wt fly rod and reel set up, any suggestions anons? Also, any size nets you'd recommend? I was looking at the fishpond El Jefe net, seems big enough. I have a small trout net but that seems way too small and short for salmon.

Yeah, it was a major let down for steelhead. I did get some nice cut throat out near the Trask though, so even if the salmon runs suck I can still basically fish trout year round around here. Gales Creek campground off highway six in the Tillamook woods. You won't haul in anything huge but the fish eat anything because no one fishes the little creek that runs through the campground. It is very nice.

Right now I am running 8 lb mono on my UL, so I probably only have something like 60 yards of line on the spool. That being said being realistic...30 yard cast into 10 ft of water would probably the max distance (which would rarely even happen anyway). Since the spool capacity isn't that big though I could always try like straight fluorocarbon or something since it would be that expensive to spool.

There are of places to catch trout all over, we're definitely blessed in that regard. I landed a few fatty 'bows up at Diamond Lake this summer. They get BIG there, I landed a fat 20" from the east bank and the boat dudes had some even bigger than that. I managed to hook a couple steelies at my money hole in Eugene this summer but they both spit the lure after the first run. Have you ever gone after coastal run cutties? I'd like to target some of those but I need to learn more about them.

Haven't hit coastal run cut throat yet, but I think they are just about to start getting into the system. I need to check, the ones I got a month or so back were only 5-8 inches but man they were pretty fish. I will post one. Fun too, they hit all my dry flies on my glass 3 wt and it was fun trying to find the holes they were in.

Sunfish spines only extend in one direction. If you "pet" the fish from the head to the tail the spines will lay flat. I have caught 100's of sunfish and have never been hurt. Only fish I am scared of are small catifsh since those assholes will shank you. I keep them in my net and use forceps to remove the hook.

All creeks have fish in them barring extreme pollution from say, mining. Ponds in any even remotely popular park will have fish in them either naturally, from official stocking, or from unofficial stocking.

I am using 8 lb because I have never broke off fighting a fish before and don't really want to. I have seen footage of anglers I respect breaking when they are using stuff like 2 or 4 lb and I doubt it was anything they did wrong and was the gear. I might go down to a 6 lb line.

Actually now that I look up the line diameters, they don't actually scale linearly like I assumed. For example: 4 lb mono is roughly 1.6 times the size of 2 lb mono but 6 lb mono is only 1.1 times the size of 4 lb mono.

I didn't do any measuring while spooling but my reel should be able to hold about 90 yards of 8 lb mono, that's plenty.
