The fire pits were a way to keep warm without being spotted,
trackers would often have dried goods when out in the brush.
If thats the case then , air exchange is being atifled by blocking the "exhaust" hole.
i think what some posters are getting at is that
if the top portion of the air flow in vent isn;t aupported through wet clay or whatever, it can risk collapse then put your fire out.
Make a couple of air vents if you can see if that works, all try to make a "sail" to catch the wind and direct more towrds the hole.
sometimes those little rocket stoves can have trouble lighting if you fill them up too much.
