However I got spooked by a group of possums when I slept, so I woke up, couldn't get back to sleep and continued my way, however on an alternative trail, which turned out to be an awful idea. I almost got lost, since this trail was at some point overgrown with grass and I didn't want to turn back since going the same trail back would have been more difficult than continuing. That and the next night helped me a lower my fear of being alone in the dark. It was a time, where every decision I took made my situation worse.

I am not fond of having a pet as a surrogate child but that would be a scenario where a dog would be useful.
