What's the best axe you can recommend for bushcraft? Getting into it with 2 friends and we have no idea what gear to get, and I keep hearing different opinions on everything from the people at my local shop

What's the difference between the old ones compared to the new? The new seem like they would be more durable

I have one very similar to that. It's pretty good. I just use it for quick hacks around the farm. It's small though. It's very much a hatchet, and a small one at that.

Buy something cheap at lowes with a wood handle and sharpen it properly with a file and stone.

Then start checking yardsales and flea markets as time permits for a really nice old axe head. The cheapie will do you fine until you find a nice axe head

Wooden handle, traditional head. Axes are shaped this way for good reason and new axes with single-piece designs or weird connections just make the axe worse; metal handles are particularly awful for ergonomics.

Hultafors, Hults Bruks and Husqvarna all do decent axes at an entry price point. If you want something fancy, get a gransfors bruks.
